oFlyingDutchman Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 As the tittle says, I've a question about this custom loadout for the mig. For the past few days, i've been flying the mig in the campaing, and one thing got me curious, the 20mm where locked. After some digging around the internet, i couldn't find anybody to help me with that, so here im Anybody know exactly when the 20mm start to be avaliable for the migs in the campaing?
1CGS LukeFF Posted May 24, 2018 1CGS Posted May 24, 2018 It's available starting in June 1942, i.e., the start of the Stalingrad campaign. Historically, this mod was applied to a small number of planes at the end of the MiG's serial production. 1

Danziger Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Just now, LukeFF said: I'd like to see a source for that. This. The whole reason the MiG didn't have cannons to begin with was because of the failed 23mm design it was supposed to originally carry (the designer was executed) and at the start of the war there was a shortage of ShVak 20mm. The twin 12.7 and 20mm were fitted in the field until the last series that came with twin 20s from the factory.

Dang, just looked it up and sure enough Yakov Taubin was executed after the competitors design (VYa-23) won trails. I also read in that search that there was a shortabge of 20mm Shvak cannons but nothing about the Migs not being completely outfitted with them.
Danziger Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 The MiG wasn't slated to get any ShVak since it would have the 23mm. When that fell through all the ShVaks were spoken for at the time so MiG had to work with what was available. It was the same with the AM37 engine the MiG was designed for. It never came to fruition and had to use the Il-2s AM35 that it wasn't designed for. Then Stalin ordered the MiG production to end because he didn't want them mooching any more Il-2 engines because Il-2s were more needed. His famous we "need Il-2s like bread and water" line was actually in the final warning letter to Mikoyan to stop MiG production.
