angus26 Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 These new motor cars are the bee's knees! Lets drive into town for a quick jaunt in the city, and maybe after that we'll go take a ride in one of those new fangled aero-planes! What is the "computer" you speak of? What is this "Battle of Stalingrad" you guys are talking about? Why is everyone here talking about a second world war! I thought the last one was supposed to be the one to end em all!
Vig Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Yeah, I feel it. I think I would be more comfortable c. 1890.
Legioneod Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Nostalgia is an interesting thing. 1920s would be my thing, or the 1860-1900s going west and exploring the frontier.

56RAF_Roblex Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I have always thought that, if you were rich, the 1930s would have been a fun time. Buy a Tiger Moth, have a few hours of lessons then take it home and land on Mummys lawn :-) If you need to work for a living but have an inheritance then buy a flying boat and run cargo around the Pacific. Maybe risk life & limb being a mail pilot.

When you look at the real world cost of a Tiger Moth compared to a normal workers salary, it is the same as a Gulfstream is to you today. But I'd love to live in ancient times as well. But healthy. Rich. A king, no, a healthy, rich king. Then all womenfolk would be mine. The pretty ones at least. I could order them by decree not to nag. I also could decapitate any counselor that comes and doesn't back up his claims with a proof. It'd be great. 2

Twenty years earlier a well-heeled young man could only entertain himself riding horses, hunting or joining the army. A young woman had just the horses really. Suddenly both men & women with nothing better to do could fly their Tiger Moth or drive their Bentley recklessly round the countryside :-) Even someone poorer might manage to pick up something cheap from the RAF after the first war and do joyrides or start an airline. Obviously any era is good when you are rich but the other good time for me would have been the age of Gentleman Scientists. Go explore a foreign land or discover a new element or new planet. Gambit21 Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 This world is going downhill at an alarming, exponential rate - and we're the generation that get's to witness it. Horrible and fascinating at the same time.

Horrible and fascinating at the same time. In my opinion, probably not. I have met, in my time at my school, a lot of very educated, and good people. (I can’t speak for other schools) these kids give me a little hope as a lot of them genuinely don’t associate with the people we always hear about. It’s just we don’t hear from these good kids, cause usually they are not in the news/spotlight (they keep their heads low) unlike all these stupid trends, stupid kids, that drag in all the attention. Sure the world may be going downhill, but if it does at least I’ll be sorrounded by some good people. “I’m gonna get my kicks in before the whole shithouse goes up in flames” -Jim Morrison 1

My sister pulled her kids out of public school and is now home-schooling them because of all of this - in hopes she can help shape their awareness enough to give them some armor against it. I'm not as hopeful as you, but we'll see.
AndyJWest Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Has there ever been a time when the older generation (or at least a significant proportion of them) didn't insist that the world was going to hell in a hand basket? 2 1

No there hasn't Andy, but this is different (I know, has there ever been a generation that didn't say...) we can do that all day. I won't go down the rabbit hole here, angus knows of what I speak. Suffice to say we're not dealing with females wearing pants, the word "Damn" making it into a movie, or Elvis' pelvis now - it's much more nefarious. I can't speak specifics without breaking the UA.
Poochnboo Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 (edited) Ha!! How would you like to have grown up in the 1960's. Viet-Nam, draft dodgers, rampant drug use, Hippies, a President assasinated, race riots, College students shot by National Guardsmen, LSD, free love!!! The world was ending I tell ya!!! Oh no, wait.....yeah, it's still here. Edited May 17, 2018 by Poochnboo

This is the only thing I'd really have to disagree with. Majority of people are poor nowadays also, you don't need to be rich or even middle class to have a good life. My grandparents grew up during the depression and were poor but they had a good life, my dad was poor also and grew up working on plantations. Personally I wouldn't mind rolling the dice even if it meant being poor(mostly because I'm already poor), the experience would be worth it.
CanadaOne Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 I was a teenager in the 70s when the music was awesome and the chicks still looked groovy. I have no complaints.

I was a teenager in the 70s and although I got the best of Bowie and Roxy etc at the beginning, I then had to survive the middle section full of Disco music I can remember looking athe UK charts one week and seeing only two UK acts in the top 20. One was Cliff Richard and the other was Vera Lynn! Thank god for Punk & New Wave 1
Gambit21 Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 I was a kid in the 70's (born in 70) but I just kept listening to the Eagles and Petty, and Gordon Lightfoot...and Johnny Cash etc etc etc... until...well now. One day I saw that a small movie house was showing "The General." I went in and watched and I was hysterical. One of the funniest films I've seen to this day. He was great.
Gambit21 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Which is the guy who stood there while the entire facade of a barn fell on him, while he was standing in the perfect spot so that when it fell the hay door up top slipped right around his body. Keaton or Chaplin...but in either case that was over the top nutballs.
