dburne Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 The morning dawned just like any other morning, sun shining bright on the fields of Kuban. My flight got to the planning room and we found out we were assigned another boring ground attack escort mission. It is bad enough we were about 70 miles from the assigned area, but now we were to escort a flight of A-20 B's. The previous two escort missions resulted in long flights without even a hint of enemy action. Oh well this one should be easy enough. My flight of four Spits took off and began the climb, to meet up with A-20's. We got to altitude just above them, and settled on a cruising speed of around 160 mph to match theirs. It was some time before we eventually crossed into enemy territory. Shortly after the A-20's began their attack run, and we started flying long lazy circles around them as my flight leader was. Then all of a sudden, radio chatter went nuts - I mean there were screams coming through. I did not see anything so yanked my Spit around hard, only to find when pulling through the turn apparently two flights of four 109's - G2's I think - heading straight for the A-20's. My engine was pretty cool after cruising for so long at low rpm, so I immediately slammed the rpm lever to get to just short of 28k on the needle, and through the boost to around +10. It was not long, before the four of us found ourselves engaged in one hell of a fireball. I heard screams only to witness one of my team mates going down in a ball of flames. Luckily for me, the 109's were mostly still focused more on the A-20's. So I threw +12 boost and started toward them, keeping my nose well ahead of them in the turns to cut the lead shorter. When I got within about 1,000 ft of the one in front of me, I threw the hammer with +16 boost and now I was closing rapidly. When I got within convergence range, I let loose a short burst of cannons. Blammo there goes his wing, and his plane - hell yeah! I see my Captain not too far off in his own battle, and see him nail the 109 he was chasing. On we continued, besides losing yet another team mate, the Captain and I kept going at it. Eventually we found just ourselves, not sure how the heck we did it, but there we were all alone with no enemies in sight - and all the A-20's intact and already on a home trajectory. Woohoo! Captain and I made it back to home base without incident, both greasing our landings in and taxiing to the parking area where we shut off our engines, climbed out of the cockpit, and said a silent prayer for our fallen comrades. What an experience. At the debriefing discovered I myself had 4 kills, my mind was still numb and in a bit of a haze. Thankfully they have given us the rest of the day off, for a well deserved rest before the next assignment. No the above was not a dream, but an actual virtual experience flying in the new BoX Career Mode. This was the 8th mission in this particular Career, which is like the 6th Career for me so far. This is what the Career is all about. 2 3
