It ain't over until it's over...

Kuban P-39 career. We'd been sent to provide ground cover, but the Luftwaffe never turned up, so we went back home. And then...

Some abysmal shooting, I know. Being shot at by your own flak tends to be distracting. That's my excuse, anyway...

A real little thriller, Andy! I'd like such unforeseen things to happen more in sim - enemies near while you are on return flight.

As for the shooting: maybe you were just too thrilled to shoot any better - or you could do with this video perhaps?
Made by SYN REQUIEM, it one of many excellent tutorials he has made. (He is a real life pilot by the way)

Same mission type, but with the Spitfire happened to me... enemy didn't show up, flew back to home airfield.

Just entered the circuit, BAM!!!... jumped by a jerry.

Wounded, Spit was like a colander... but no thoughts on landing, I just gave it full power, climbing and getting the gear up again.

I levelled out at 3000ft, made sure the Spit was pointing away from the airfield, cut power and bailed out... Lived to fight another day!

No AA fire from the shed load of aa guns on the airfield though, bastages!

Still, that will teach me... it aint over till it's over!

With hindsight, bailing might have been the more sensible option, given the state the P-39 ended up in. Though I think the reason the nose gear collapsed was because I was still extending it when I touched down.

Yes, watching it, I don't think the gear had time to fully lock...

Not necessarily, Andy. I once came home with a Flak hit, with many holes in the right wing, but neither
any engine damage nor fuel or coolant leaks.

Instead, my right gear was missing the wheel - which I couldn't know; green lights showed "gear out".
And of course, the naked right gear ploughed into the ground, and my Messerschmitt roughly circled right round.

Must say, I like such differing damage results! Didn't expect that, and it woke me up!

Yeah, could have been damaged, though I was certainly late putting the gear down. As for missing wheels, I remember returning to base in  a Ju 88 once after a low-level attack on a ship, and being surprised by a sudden yaw as I extended the gear. I managed to get it down on the runway, only for it to groundloop immediately. Reviewing the recording showed that I'd lost a main wheel, which accounted for the less than elegant landing.

That AAA needs to be banned for friendly fire...........................
