Figured I start a thread for the 4K version of the Yak since a) there isn't one and b) I wouldn't go to the 2K section for a 4K skin but that's where most people seem to insist on posting them (a personal bug).

3 Skins based on Yak 3s from the Normandie Nieman - ICDP template - works best with his Normal map.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/h6firkjfjhyfcdb/Normandie_Nieman_Yak1b.zip

OO belonging to Col. Louis Defino

6 belonging to Lt. Marcelle Albert

27 a generic airframe to display the rudder tri colour scheme

Thought this would be a 2 hour splat and run but its turned into a 5 day saga. For all the alterations and changes made to the template see the spoiler.

Spoiler

ICDP's4K templates are works of art. In the case of the Yak 1b there are some minor issues that ive corrected for my skins. None are major. Anyone with a modicum of skill and methodology could resolve the matters in a few minute. I have neither. Its taken me DAYS!! :-)  In the main the issues centre on the aircraft parts layer that the fact that most of the internal leading and trailing edges are about face. That is to say the upper and lower surface colours are upside down or back to front. You'll see it on the aileron edges on many 1b skins as you roll.  I also found some layers a little misaligned which is why its always a good idea to go through all the weathering layers with a bare skin first.

My skins are 90 percent ICDP. For the 1b and in addition to a pseudo Yak 3 scheme (with a contrived pattern around the nose to compensate for the mirror imaging of the exhaust covers and a lower wing demarcation to match the phots I have) and the aircraft markings Ive:

Added layers to the panel lines to add some depth

Added hi and low lights to the rivets and spilt then to upper and lower to provide depth

Added new staining and exhaust layers

Added chipped paint (wood and metal) to the wing leading edges

Amended the alpha to cut out the recesses in the ailerons to allow the hinges to show in S&L flight

Amended the aircraft parts layer to correct the paint mismatches

New chips layers

New Alpha

Seeing your skins made me look up Louis DeFino. Interesting career. Here is his kill board:

Flight lieutenant / Captain
GC I/4

11.05.40 (7) He 111 Halle

GC II/9

25.25.40 (2) Bf 109 Moreuil
26.05.40 (5) Hs 126 Péronne [80]
05.06.40 (2) He 111 Compiègne [60]
05.06.40 (7) Hs 126 Péronne [80]
06.06.40 (5) Hs 126 Soissons [02]
09.06.40 (5) Hs 126 Formerie [60]

Squadron leader / Major

GC I/4

12.08.42 (3) Wellington [ Dakar ]

GC 3

16.10.44 (1) Bf 109 Darkehmen [Eastern Pomerania ]
18.04.44 (1) Fw 190 Stallupönen [E.P.]
22.10.44 (3) Fw 190 Insterburg [E.P.]
26.10.44 (2) Bf 109 Gumbinnen [E.P.]
16.01.45 (1) Fw 190 Kussen [E.P.]
11.02.45 (2) Bf 109 Rositten [E.P.]
27.03.45 (2) Fw 190 Pillau [E.P.]

It seems that he flew for both sides at one time or another. He obviously was busy during the early defense of France in 1940. But then it seems that he must have flown for the Vichy French because he destroyed a Wellington. Somehow he went back to flying against the Germans again with The Normandy Nieman unit. He became a General after the war and was quite an important individual in the French Air Force of the 1950's. He died of a heart attack at only 56.

Well done you, BOO!! Nicer job(s). I aint done any 1B's yet (apart from a personal one). May get around to it soon I think as I love the plane. The '3' is a particularly rich(er) source for liveries, aint it? After all, the good M'sieur Sauvage was oft seen pootling around in one, for starters!

The career soldiers were not demobilized during the armistice so many of them were at Vichy's command.

Their situation was complicated because as of July 3, 1940, 1300 French sailors died during the attack of Mers-el-Kebir, only 2 weeks after the end of the battle of France.

It is not easy to make the right decisions in these conditions.

Other pilots have had similar experiences. The Gloan gets 7 wins against the RAF before flying again alongside the British on P39.

Delfino and the other Vichy pilots who came to reinforce the GC3 Normandie were initially badly received then they were able to be accepted.
