NETSCAPE Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Can someone provide a basic guide to modding IL2 sounds? From what I've gathered on here it involves FMOD, which I've never used. I do however have experience with audio. I just need to know how to insert it into the game (and also extract and analyze the vanilla audio for reference). thanks.
Tiger_33 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 It is impossible to explain the method because for anything to work, you have to recreate the entire sound bank and then you can start doing almost what you want. But it's a huge amount of work (And I know what I'm talking about because I've been there since 2013 now.) 2
NETSCAPE Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 Rodger that. Standing down I guess. Back to the ME......

Tiger did some wonderful work for his private mod but I think he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder over it so I wouldn't allow him to immediately discourage you.
NETSCAPE Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 All I had in mind was producing a new Stuka Siren effect. 1

Sorry but if there was another way with FMOD I would have tried to explain how to do but unfortunately it is not the case. 7 minutes ago, NETSCAPE said: All I had in mind was producing a new Stuka Siren effect. Mitthrawnuruodo Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 From discussions about other games, it appears that there are tools available that can be used to set up a viable FMOD modding workflow. I haven't tried it myself yet, but perhaps you could find information somewhere else and apply it to Il-2. I don't know what to say about Tiger. He had a working sound mod that was never released. There was an angry discussion a few months ago. 1
Avyx Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 i wish so badly, the guns sound should be different, maybe it's just me but I don't really like them

Engine sounds and airflow around the aircraft should drown everything else out.
NETSCAPE Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) Stuka Siren apparent loudness > everything else lol. Edited May 11, 2018 by NETSCAPE

You can start here with the YouTube video link provided by " Redeye" https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/35010-engine-sound-mods-and-official-sounds/?page=2 or direct link to YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccSsMLAYNns Maybe it can give you some clues. and fsb file extractor for extracting fsb archive files http://aezay.dk/aezay/fsbextractor/
NETSCAPE Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 Cool gart, I'll check it out later. Busy working on new AI formation logic...

6./ZG26_5tuka Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 There method of solely replacing sounds is quite simple by reassembling the FSB audio bank file but what I'm having toruble with is exporting it with the proper settings. The game will start up fine but not read the new FSB file so does the FMod Event player. Once sby sheds light on that particular issue I wouldn't mind writing a small tutorial about it. 1

Yes please as I would like to have a crack at those gun sounds.
-LUCKY-ThanksSkeletor Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 The engine sounds in this game are so close to being very good, they just need to be tuned a bit I think (radial engines especially). The gun sounds are super hit and miss, the British 303 Cal. And the German 13mm and 30mm guns sounds great while everything else is very strange and loud sounding, from inside the cockpit they should sound muffled. I really hope an effective way of modding them is found.

Sandinourcoffee6 Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 The flak sounds are bit tame me thinks with a loud roaring engine as it was, would you hear anything much. perhaps in the jet engine me-262 with the more quiet engines, you might hear the flak, bullets, damage etc
Trooper117 Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I love all this speculation about what things should sound like... if you haven't been there and done that, then you simply don't know. What is needed is the ability for the user to adjust various sounds to their own tastes... problem solved 2

Feathered_IV Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 I can live with all sounds except the terrible engine loop noise that you get in the P-39 cockpit. The sound sample is not seamless and gives a rhythmic lurch every seven or eight seconds. It is so distracting I end up quitting the mission before I'm even out of sight of the airfield. 1

You mean the "weeee weeee weeee"? I find it a bit odd too. I get a feeling the P40 engine sound (when not in WEP) is too peaceful, gives me the impression I'm going even slower than im already going. Tyberan Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 I wish someone would take the 50cal noise from the a20 and chuck it on the the p40. The gun noises on the p40 sound like place holders from some generic gun noise off a crappy FPS game.
Avyx Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Tiger_33 should be able ( allowed) to do the sound mods for IL-2 Sturmovik BoX.. 1

-LUCKY-ThanksSkeletor Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 i do not know but i do not want to pressure him into releasing them for the public to use. Its his choice and that's that.

SCG_motoadve Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 My theory is that his mods dont work in IL2 BOS and what he showed was an edited video. This worked until he was given permission and mods allowed. And after all the hype about his sounds he doesnt want to tell. 1

It would be a real shame if that were the case but I can certainly see it as a possibility. It would also explain the aversion to explaining the process to other people who want to attempt creating sound mods. 3
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 If you had an better understanding of the mechanics behind FMod you'd know perfectly well possible to do it, just a huge amount of work.

If I had a better understanding..? Alright. Nobody said it was impossible, bud. Nobody said that it was easy or that it was very little work. However, the whole situation with Tiger makes no sense. The details don't add up. The fact is there are no results. I think I speak for quite a few of us when I say it would be nice for Tiger to prove us wrong but until that time, I remain a skeptic that his mod really exists past the videos he published years back. -47-Uncle_Bob Posted September 8, 2018 Posted September 8, 2018 Tiger, your a legend in the old il2 community. Expect a lot of envious people. I am still playing il2 1946 with your fantastic soundmods and flybysounds. I try not to think to much about it, but I want to bash my head into the wall when I hit that flyby in il2 bos. So dull when I know what it could be. It is strange the developers and most people dont share my views on the flybysounds. 1

I've tried it (also being very interested in gettting rid of poor stock sounds), but it doesn't seem to work, neither in cockpit nor outside.
Ptk Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 p40 a20 gun test\data\luascripts\sound\planes Works for me.
Art-J Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 (edited) OK, so what am I supposed to do with contents of the archive? I presume extract the data\[...] folder to main game folder, right? What I find puzzling is there's no sound\planes folders in luascript location, nor is there a P40E1.cfg file anywhere in the stock game, to be replaced by your modded one. Edit - solved! Didn't know in this sim one has to enable mods in the game settings even for such a simple sample repalcement. Quite a difference compared to DCS. All fine now and I'm very pleased with result, thanks! That being said, adding even a simple readme file to archive would make things easier for novice BoX users like me. Feathered_IV Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 Does anybody know the internal file structure of the FMOD package? A screenshot for example would be very helpful.
