Was flying a transport mission on TAW an got jumped by 3 reds. Only knew it when I saw the tracers above my cockpit. How come that the gunners fail to inform the pilot of the enemy contacts. Shouldn't they be scanning the sky? Only a while after taking fire one of them called "he's engaging". An early warning could be useful to survive. I'm sure that in reality the gunners would look for contacts and notify the pilot as if their life depend on it.

On a clear day in a low flying bomber the gunners should be able to see the fighters against the firmament before that them see my plane. Maybe then escape even before the fighters see me.

Yeah, the whole system needs reworked - they've also needed a "Gunner: Hold Position" command for a few years now.

As it stands, the poor AI situation is the largest single obstacle to my enjoyment of IL-2. Hiring somebody to mend these issues (AI/commands/chatter) needs to become a significant development priority.

This MP bug with the mute gunners has been there since day one and has never been fixed.

It is really annoying and breaks bomber play especially if you are in something with bad visibility like an IL2.

It seems to be a bug server side, it's also very annoying, because it takes away that early warning you get from the gunners. It happens around 60% of the time and more so when the server is nearing capacity. I agree with Space-Ghost it would be grand to have a reworked system somewhere down the line.

Even when it does work it isn't as helpful as it should be. Gunners could give more info like enemy low/high at 7 o'clock 2 km....... that would be much better.

Yep, something like it's 17 year old predecessor.

It really makes sence what you all are writing. And how much it would benefit the bomber pilots job if devs would do what you are suggesting. And most of all it would be much more like in real situation.  It doesnt sound too difficult to do either. This correction should be high priority. Maybe they dont see this,( from all their busyness ) easy way to make game better.

I'm not asking for the gunners tell me jokes during cruise, but just somehow report when the IA see a contact. In the case I report some gunner did damage on the fighter, but didn't heard their guns until the reds started shooting. I believe that happen to me before, mostly in two seaters that the gunner seems "disable". Like the rear gunner didn't see or shoot the enemy but the others did.

Did gunners use a binoculars too? Is it possible in a shaky airplane?

Missing that too !

Yes it's important to note it's a MP only issue. I've never ever had an issue in single player. And I haven't played enough CO-OP to judge yet.

I had it once recently, flying a 110 in career mode, I was attacked by a russian fighter, and after that my gunner told me, he opens fire on an enemy. That is no fun. But if it happens very rarely, it is not too unrealistic, this might happen to a real gunner, too. But of course, when this happens more often, like it seems to be in MP, this is clearly something, that has to be reworked.

If the AI pilots can tell you they are engaging an enemy ten kilometres away to the southeast and keep banging on about it.  Then there is no reason an AI gunner can't be made to report on distant contacts and keep the player informed of their position.

Yes, but this, too, does not always work. My avatar again and again tells me which aircraft he thinks I am attacking, but then again, sometimes he is quiet and I get attacked out of nowhere.

BTW, it is nice when they tell you the direction in southeast. It is pretty odd, when you are flying those one kilometre radius circles and some AI tells you he is engaging enemy in four o'clock.

I've had the situation where the gunner is calling out attacks but as soon as he runs out of ammunition he just sits there silent i can't remember if it was sp or mp though

This is for me the biggest weak point of this simulator

The gunners

1-Do not talk sometimes as mentioned

2-never talk about a CRITICAL single information: the position of the enemy

3-When they shoot on Germans bomber (?) , they always miss , or at best they land 1 or 2 bullets on enemy

Add this with the cranky use of turrets.

All this beaks the bomber play.

Because of that , I never really liked  to play bomber on this sim whereas I enjoyed bomber play on the old Il2 , I was in a bomber squadron.

This is the sad true I am ashamed to admit.

If you go to the mods section and download the English Radio chatter voice pack the gunners will let you when they see an enemy contact, as well as when they engage. It's a mod that doesn't require "mods on" mode so it does indeed work in MP as well.
