Finally got a chance to try BoS

Finally found an opportunity to try IL2 BoS ... not had access to my normal computer for a while, but I have been very much been looking forward to having a go.

So firstly, wow! Even at such an early stage I'm really enjoying flying in BoS. For me it runs smoothly, with no major bugs. I've never flown in real life, so I'll let others comment on how realistic it is, but I really like the sense of flight that it gives. I can also see that the sim has immense potential for further development. Big thumbs up!

So some flight model things I noticed. First off, I'm not a real pilot, I can provide no authority at all over what is accurate or realistic ... so this is simply a bunch of stuff that I noticed, and maybe other people noticed too .. or maybe it was just me :) Also most of this relates to the 109, because I've only had a brief play with the LaGG so far.

So one thing I have noticed is that the planes in IL2 BoS are hard to land, harder than any other sim I've tried. I'm hardly a professional pilot, but I've done a good number of virtual landings over the years. Even so my first landings in IL2 BoS were quite ropey. Even now, after quite a bit of practice, it's rare that I manage it without even a small bounce. Perfectly acceptable landings, but hardly butter smooth.

Don't know if anyone else felt the same, but to me it seems that in IL2 BoS the plane loses speed in the flare very quickly. I would normally think of 210 kph as really a bit fast side for a final, especially if the runway is a bit short. But I quickly found that it's about right in BoS because by the time you've done the flare you'll be down to 150kph, which is about stall speed. Also the way that speed bleeds off means timing the flare is super critical: too early and you'll stall too high, too late and you'll do a huge bounce. Of course timing the flare is always important, but in other sims I definitely felt that you can get away with a lot more.

Then again other things people have had problems with, I haven't had any. For example, lots of people have had ground loops and similar. Not had that problem at all ...

However, I did sometimes feel like the trim (in the 109) behaved somehow a little strangely. What I'm used to with trim is that if you set a particular trim the plane will want to go at a certain speed regardless of throttle setting. In BoS it felt like it sort of wants to go at the trim speed, but what this speed is seems to vary somewhat with throttle setting. For example you set a particular trim, go 75% throttle and it stabilizes at 195kph ... then you drop to 25% throttle and it stabilizes at 210kph. Need to investigate this a bit more to check that really is what I'm seeing, after all speed swings around a bit anyway.

Not that any of this is a complaint, more of an observation. I'm really impressed with BoS so far and can't wait to see how the development progresses!

Try the crosswind landings in the LaGG and see if you ground loop :)

Ha no, haven't tried that ... will have to give it a go :)

Trim should vary with throttle setting, that's quite correct behaviour.
