Any plans to address the startup procedure?

Gents,

As time goes by I never forget the itch for the channel battles and the airframes of 1940. However, like many of you, I'm quickly reminded how the immersion is completely taken away on engine startup with that simplistic fuel cock on-start engine, and then that awful rumbling and shaking with a cold engine.

In BoX, we see each switch, pump and lever being activated. It just never grows old and really makes the airframe feel like a machine coming alive rather than a simplistic toy.

I was wondering if TF has the capability with this game engine and the plans to address the old fuel cock on-engine start, and bring this up to scratch?

Along with the spinning around on the ground like a kite and the awful rumbling and surging effect with a cold engine, these are all huge immersion and realism flaws that have been around for a long time now. Instead of getting ambitious with new theatres and planes, why don't the core issues like the aforementioned get focused on? CLOD will always be seen as a Battle of Britain experience first and foremost, and so it should be. Why not fix what is there already?

I guess you missed our recent post, we will be adding a pre-warmed option to the aircraft start.  (please take a look at the recent forum posts)

In regards to cold starts, we do not plan to change the process... other than to add more realistic cold starts to fuel injected types.

With all due respect, if you take the time to read about the real aircraft, or watch online videos of warbird cold starts, you will understand '...that awful rumbling and shaking' is a real part of WWII piston engined aircraft warmup.

Your request for changes to the ground friction has been noted... it is already on the list of issues we hope will be addressed for TF 5.0.  At the moment, there is a 'Chocks In' option which eliminates any aircraft movement... although what you mention typically this only happens on cold start, not when engines are running, and it is usually just a slight pivoting... I have never observed an aircraft 'spinning'.

As far as animations for every single switch pump and lever... if we do this, it will be so the players can activate the switches themselves, not so uncontrolled animations appear when they hit a generic 'start' button.

Thanks for your interest.  :salute:

Uncontrolled animation? Oh, I'm guessing this is a reference to the current start procedures in the current BOx series?

I actually enjoy those start procedures, however, i'm interested to know whether you are inferring that the future with TF (if you do it) will be something similar to the DCS type start ups, or will we be able to select either/or?  In addition, are you able to discuss in depth the bucket list for TF 5.0 so I can better manage my expectations?

Regards

I also think that having more in-depth start-up procedures would be nice. Fuel cocks, then press I, isn't that realistic or interesting. It would be cool if the magnetoes could be made functional, and perhaps we had to prime the fuel as well with the Ki-Gas primer on the Spitty and whatever the equivalent is on the 109. Maybe make us turn on the battery power as well? It would make start-ups a bit more interesting.

We would like to go to more comprehensive startup procedures in a similar way to what DCS models... however, this is a priority behind quite a few other elements, (VR for example), so we can't promise this for TF 5.0.

Buzzsaw,

Thank you for that, however, the other part of that question was whether we would be able to select either/or as I'm still not exactly clear if your reference to DCS meant that it would be the only way. Therefore, just for my own clarification, is the future you envisage one where we can only have a start system as per DCS or will we be able to select either the DCS start routine or the quick start as we currently have or indeed eventually even that animated auto start sequence, that you mention?

Although I enjoy the clickable cockpits, currently with VR, it would appear that until the VR type gloves are mature enough, most players in VR just use short keys on a HOTAS system, so assigning the start sequence with say keys 1....through 9 for the various actions, to me will just perhaps become the norm and might not be any better than the animated system currently in BOS.

However, each to their own I guess!

I would rather prefer my ground-crew had everything running for me when I scrambled.  In deed I believe that even the V Force bombers had a quick start button to get the whole engine sequence initially started when scrambled, but I guess a Vulcan Bomber will not be available until TF 15.0. In addition, for me if we were to have all of the various bells and pulleys working for the start up, I would like to see in flight failures etc, that then required you to act accordingly using those same items.

However, one of the things I believe that is missing from BOS is the ability as per CLOD for the player to be able to say manage their own fuel tanks etc as this is certainly very useful for fuel management when damaged, so this ability for players to do these in cockpit actions is very well done in CLOD.  However, doing mag drop tests on start up or compass direction tests during taxi etc etc, I guess will never be carried out prior to take-off, so although players might start the aircraft, perhaps most will not actually carry out the whole start up check.  I guess the excuse of "I'm scrambling" will be used to  avoid all of the pre-flight checks.

Opera resume:

Players want a "in dept" start-up procedure - like, e.g. In DCS Spitfire MK.IXe, but at same time an script - equivalent to DCS "Win+Home" cheater (called 'cheater' in their controls options) for run a script to start an animation like when press "E" in BoS.

Easy option: remove the need of click in fuel cock and leave only press "I" key (a la '46), will not please all - like any other option will not please, but at least is more easy to implement. :)

I personally am not bothered by the current setup, CloD is not a study sim. Using a mouse to click on virtual buttons wouldn't add much to the immersion factor for me. If it was VR and development of VR accessories allowed players to flick switches/pull levers etc. that would change things.

If any changes were to be made I'd rather it be like BoX rather than DCS. I've got X-plane if I want to run through a full startup sequence.
