Train Tunnels.....Why?

Recommended Posts

I recently tested the train tunnels on trains and this happens:

Derail_at_a_invisible_wall...thumb.png.fca156ba3ff41c38e2e0f72d23b23c10.png

The train engine explodes and everyone in the box cars flee like winter rabbit on a bad day.

So whats the point, the point is how can they go though mountains if this happens when chasing trains.  What the point for these tunnels and the one leading to the City of Moscow in the Moscow map.

It's obvious from the picture...German spies have bricked up the tunnel 5m inside

Not a bad idea... put some rock wall or something inside dark tunnel and train crash into it

Most likely a geometry bug where the devs forgot to punch a hole through.

Well yeah it not the only one, the're an other tunnel (that uses the road) that goes through the Moscow Canal heading to the City of Moscow also has a geometry bug as well.

When they update their titles, can they please fix it.  I would be nice.

And thanks for replying.

No problem. It might be worth copying your post into the bug report forum to make sure the devs are aware of it.

Noticed the same on Kuban map - I'm afraid it's not a bug.

Upcoming Bodenplatte map will have to feature many more railway tunnels than any of the maps until now, so probably/hopefully they will rework this.

For example:

West Rhine Railway

East Rhine Railway

Maybe we could use this instead?

Classic :D

I didn't know the tunnels were broken... I'm sure they can be fixed.

Pfft.. you want the Mig 21 for that tunnel

On a side note, it is interersting that DCS actually introduced 3D tunnels into the terrain in 2.5 to avoid having to come up with other solutions for this "train continuety" problem.. but once you take a closer look at all those tunnels in Georgia, oh boy.. those engineers probably got their jobs because they had an uncle in the party or so.. same goes for road tunnels. But despite only few beeing flyable due to super weird steep entries and stuff, it is still great and I love it.

I do hope the developers create proper 3D tunnels for BoX: amusing though the OP's discovery is, the comic potential of realistic tunnels is much greater.....

„Proper“ Tunnels mean increasing geometry on the map. This puts a direct impact on your FPS. VR folks will not like that. Unless you are a Zebra, quality of tunnels do not correlate with increased playability of this sim...

On the other hand, there are few tunnels. If you make rhem nice don‘t forget to place a sign „Here be Zebras“.

It's possible that the method used to store terrain height data prohibits overhangs such as tunnels. If that is the case, a substantial part of the engine would have to be rewritten to accommodate proper tunnels. Besides having performance implications, this could require a lot of work.

Some other games have similar issues. All of the tunnels that I've seen in ARMA 3 are just trenches with big objects placed over them.

I don't know, but I doubt it.

The terrain is a mesh just like everything else.

A reasonable, localized increase in geometry also should not impact performance. Vehicles, buildings etc are also localized increases in geometry. A small village with 2 vehicles is comprised of way more geometry than a tunnel entrance.

Why „Proper“ Tunnels? - we need A and B Tunnels where the train teleport from A to B, where Zebra can show how he teleport planes from A to B

Is it a mesh? If it is, you're right; implementing tunnels wouldn't be a significant problem.

However, if it's simply based on a heightmap, tunnels and certain cliffs wouldn't be possible without substantial workarounds.

Fair point Mitth - I didn't consider that it might be a heightmap - normal map or similar.

Let´s not forget that completly bug-free 3D tunnels are still something never done in a flightsim yet:
