TP_Silk Posted April 30, 2018 Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) I am considering using my MSDN subscription to host an occasional DServer. Is anyone else using a similar online/VM solution to host and is so how well does it work? I'm probably going to host on a Windows 2016 server VM if it will work. If not then I can probably get a Windows 10 Pro VM installed. Edited April 30, 2018 by TP_Silk
SYN_Vander Posted April 30, 2018 Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) Be aware that dserver is not utilizing multiple cores AFAIK, so for good performance you are better of with a dual core with high Ghz than a server with multiple cores with lower Ghz. Not all offered VM solutions support this. Maybe you can try it for a month or so and see how well it works? Edited April 30, 2018 by SYN_Vander
TP_Silk Posted April 30, 2018 Author Posted April 30, 2018 Yes, thanks I am aware of that. If I do go down this route I'll be trying one of the high CPU to Memory ratio packages. That's also why I'm thinking of using my subscription to test.
TP_Silk Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 Update: I managed to get a VM up and running, enabled Turbo Mode on the virtual processor and got IL-2 installed and configured (mostly in startup.cfg). Where it all fell apart is that when I opened to the Mission Editor to re-save a mission that I'd uploaded to the VM, I experienced multiple D3D errors as there is no graphics card and the graphics driver for the VM over RDC does not support Direct3D, so I can't save the mission on the local machine and hence it looks as though I won't be able to host it.
SAS_Storebror Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Why would you want to resave the mission? My dedicated server has no graphics card either, just the Microsoft "basic" gpu driver is installed, and ME works just fine. Cheers! Mike
TP_Silk Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 When moving mission files between devices the exact path between various files can be different. This needs to be reflected in both the sds and in the .info file of the mission. Easiest way to get everything right is to re-save the mission after moving/copying it between devices. This isn't an issue if you host from the same machine you build the mission on. Like I said, if I try and open the mission files on a VM machine it won't cope with the 3D rendering of objects that mission builder does anyway, so a virtualised graphics card won't do the trick. Apparently you can do this if you have a VMWare virtual machine, but not a Microsoft HyperV one.
SYN_Vander Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 (edited) Well the paths are relative right? So if you stick with the normal IL2 install structure there shouldn't be a problem. I don't have this problem even though on my dedicated server the game is installed to D:\Games and on my PC I have it installed in C:\Program Files. Edited May 3, 2018 by SYN_Vander
