testudine2002 Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 Hi all, I'm new to the game and I cannot control the items mentioned in the title of this post. When I press - / = alone, I do get throttle control. When I add a modifier, like the alt, shift or win key, nothing happens. I tried remapping these commands to different buttons without modifiers on the keyboard and the joystick, but no dice. I've only tried two aircraft and had the same trouble with both (Lagg-3 and Yak-1). To my knowledge, all other commands are fine. Thanks! Windows 10 / Thustmaster X / Logitech G910
chris455 Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 (edited) Do you have complex engine management settings enabled in realism settings? Edited April 29, 2018 by chris455 1
testudine2002 Posted April 29, 2018 Author Posted April 29, 2018 Thanks guys. I found the settings in the realism section as advised. Then this brings up the next question--why was I getting messages that my engine was too hot? That's why I went looking for radiator flaps in the first place. Was I pushing the aircraft beyond what the automatic controls were able to compensate for? What do I do then? Just cool it for a while (literally)?

Even 100% open rads can't dump enough heat for some engine settings (esp. boost). Really depends on the aircraft. I don't have it, but apparently the Yak-7B overheats as easily as a Canadian in the Sahara. Also keep in mind the sim has a pretty strict timeline for allowable engine settings for some aircraft, so if the tech specs say 5 min boost you really only have 5 minutes boost, past that limit you only have so much time before your engine blows.

When you fly fighters which have an "engine boost", then you should not use that for too long. You should see a number at the right, that changes when you move the throttle. A yellow arrow with two bars appears, when you use "Combat Boost". In the Bf 109 G-6 that is above 62% throttle, I think. You can use that ca. 25 minutes; maybe 30. A red arrow with three bars appears, when you use "Emergency Boost" (in the G-6 above 82% throttle). That should be used max. for a minute - after that it will ruin the engine. Watch that carefully, and you should be safe. Real experts don't look at those signs - they know the healthy engine temperatures, and will use the oil and water radiators accordingly. 1
