Finally took the plunge…

…and bought BOK – and the G6.

Allow me to introduce myself:

-        I’ve been simming for years and am a vet of Il-2 1946 and RoF.

-        I am active on the RoF and SimHQ forums

-        So I kinda get the gist already.

Questions:

1.      Best Nvidia CP settings

2.      Possible to customize the views to get them close to the Il-2 1946 approach?

3.      Camera settings – a bit confusing so should I just leave them alone?

4.      Performance curves – is there a good guide/YouTube vid available?

5.      TIR settings – I see that Requiem has one, is it “the one” to get?

6.      Must have mods – what are they?

7.      What else do I need to know?

Excited to dig in!   Thanks in advance.

Hey Barkhorn! I took the plunge this passed Christmas during sale. Bought Stalingrad. Also pre-ordered Bodenplatte. Still waiting for them to release BOK on Steam so I can use my gift card. (Hello! Any day now! Can anybody hear me?). Crickets.

Anyway, you'll enjoy it. Plays a lot like ROF which I am also a huge fan of.

I have an NVIDEA card to. In an ASUS laptop that's about 4 years old. 2GB 860M. I play this sim on high with no stutters. Turn 4K on, strangely enough, for better performance. I know it sounds as though it should work the other way around. But turn it on.

  Have fun!

There is also this. I do wish (and maybe there is and I've missed it) a list of tweaks that work for people. An all in one place sort of list.

One of the Camera settings i immediately turned off was the 'cinematic camera' or some such. It induced a lot of motion blur when I was looking around in the cockpit that I found very disorienting and distracting.

There's a lot of threads on graphics optimization. The currently active thread 'Stalingrad Autumn visibility' has a good link to graphics settings optimized for spotting and contrast.

The Manuals, Tutorials and Tips forum has a lot of sticky posts about the basics, including a full tutorial on setting up head tracking. A little more info on your system, and people will probably be able to tell you what tweaks worked on their systems too.

I'm new here myself from Il-2 1946 and the forum has been a big help in getting adjusted.

Sounds good.  Can you buy me one?

Thank you and I do have 4K checked

Thank you and I found that last evening and followed it.

I noticed the blurring too.  It is annoying and I will uncheck it.  I will also check out that thread.

Questions:

1.      NVIDIA defaults work well unless your particular situation demands something else.

2.      Views are generally similar to 1946; considerable customization options are available.

3.      Defaults should be fine; perhaps change 'cinematic camera'.

4.      Linear control input curves work well unless you need more precision around the centre of your stick.

5.      Use Requiem if it works for you.

6.      4K textures (default skins, trees, etc.) and maybe other small visual tweaks (e.g. uncensored Hakenkreuz); modding only started recently

7.      Things change quite frequently here. We went through two major rendering revisions not long ago. The developers are working on multiple projects in parallel. Expect old advice to become obsolete quickly. Make sure to check "Announcements" a few times each month.

If you play SP but don't like the default Career mode, check out PWCG. There is a significant MP scene. Naturally, online modes can be turbulent at times, especially around updates. Nevertheless, I'm sure that you will find enjoyable gameplay somewhere.

IIRC I found this little tip on a stickied forum post, but I'll be buggered if I remember which one!

I know what you mean. I've bookmarked lots of great go-to flight sim stuff, written down or printed near sheafs of paper of reference material. Damned if I can locate a solitary one of them I'm looking for. A recent clean-up has however unearthed lots of tips and tricks on CFS 2 or the original IL-2 Sturmovik sim.

I found this today and it certainly has helped with optimisation - albeit probably from just turning shadows down a notch... it could possibly be or get outdated, and I do wonder what exactly there is going on with shadows (or shaders) that I'm losing. It was always the setting I was most precious about not touching. But I gained upto around 25% fps after changing a bunch of things after reading this, and I had already been tweaking extensively for a while!

The cinematic camera is for movie makers, strangely enough. ;)    In outside views of moving objects it moves the camera around slightly thus avoiding that weird fixed, rotating object look: instead it looks as though the camera could have been on another aircraft.  Pointless for in cockpit use.

As for mods, it is very early days, but the one I am most keen on replaces the radio chatter voices with English. It sounds a bit odd, TBH, but if you do not speak German or Russian it is a good alternative to distracting subtitles.
