I'm currently thinking of running a separate DServer for around 15-20 players concurrently in a mix of single-engine and multi-crew aircraft and am wondering what sort of spec folks are running theirs on. My experience so far is that it is the multi-crew aircraft that affect performance most when hosting from my gaming machine.

My understanding is that for best results it'll require something like an i5 running at 4.00GHz plus (even though it will only use a single core for processing) and then whatever I can afford in terms of memory. all coupled to a good quality SSD. Graphics wouldn't be an issue as I'm not displaying anything but mission builder files.

We can do a stress test to check any difference between DServer on a host and running from in-game.  See what Prangster's setup is because his runs pretty smoothly.

I've also configured a VM on my Azure account to see whether that can be used. I just need to upload a mission or two and a DServer config for testing.

VM idea hosted on Azure is a no go as it throws up d3d errors due to the virtual graphics card. Ah well, back to the original idea.

Sorry Silk - was watching this but failed to read your first question

I am running a Dserver with an i7-4820K at 3.70 Ghz, 16MB Ram. I have run 16 AI Ju88's with 4 AI fighter escorts against about 8 Russian AI, bombing a fairly large target with a lot of stuff to hit on the ground, multiple vehicle convoys and trains, with 5 of us flying. Haven't had any server overload issues.

I usually try hosting from my gaming machine, which is an i7 6700 overclocked to around 4.8GHz with 16GB RAM. I think my main issues with this are that I am also playing in VR, so processor usage is high, but even if I set a processor affinity it doesn't seem to help much. My network connection should also be fine as it's a Virginmedia cabled 100Mbps subscription.

I'm also coming to the conclusion that a lot is to do with how the missions are put together as some of them use activate triggers and some use spawn triggers. I generally seem to have more problems with Server Overload messages when I use spawn triggers, which is annoying as those are the ones that drive my random aircraft/ability spawn groups. Obviously the largest problems come when multi-crew aircraft are activated/spawned.

I was hopeful that the VM hosting solution might provide a way around some at least of my issues, but it seems not to be. Apparently VMWare virtual machines can handle d3d, but Microsoft HyperV ones cannot, and as that's what Azure offer I'm bang out of luck on that score.

Most of the time it doesn't matter too much as another squadron member hosts our Sunday campaign missions, but it would be nice to have the option to do more.

Yep, I agree. I had that same issue, besides not wanting to open my flying PC to the world, so a second PC for hosting makes sense. I fly in VR as well, and hosting on it while flying just doesn't cut it. I have had no issues on hosting on a seperate PC, other than you can't currently run Co OP on Dserver.

Best of luck.

Sure you can. You can set the "Coop quorum", which will trigger the mission start after the number of pilots specified in it have made themselves "Ready" for the mission, and the "Lobby timer", which is countdown to mission begin for the other people to click "Ready" before the mission begins.

Woah - will have to try that out then. I couldn't get it to run before. It just went into spectator mode and nothing would work.
