Any recommendations for server hosting?

I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of companies that rent out rack servers for hosting il2sturmovik that have suitable networking and cpu offerings?

Ideally located in the UK and at an economical price.

We'd want to use it as a squad training and coop server. At the start we'd be very unlikely to need it running 24/7, so something virtual(ish) would do as long as performance was up to the job when needed.

I messed around with AWS for hosting a few years ago, which I use quite a bit professionally, and was unable to get anything close to acceptable performance within a reasonable price point. This was in a time when the DServer application was arguably more stable than it is now. This was all virtualized, as renting dedicated hardware from Amazon was definitely too expensive.

I think the TAW guys use a provider in Germany, which should be close enough to the UK for your purposes unless you have non-technical reasons for preferring a UK provider. They posted a link to whoever they use a year or two ago, but I forget the name- I would ask Kathon. If I remember right, it seemed reasonably priced.

Not exactly located in the UK, but in germany - should not be a big issue unless the Brexit turns out to be really "hard" ;)

You will want to have one of the i7 systems with a CPU-B value of 9000+.

Personally I'm using an i7-4770 system there with great success.

For your calculation you will have to take a suitable operating system into account too.

The Servers on that server auction ship without OS. You can order a license "on top" or install the OS yourself (in that case you can use own licenses if you have them).

Theoretically you could even install a desktop OS like Windows 10, even though I won't recommend to do so on a server that'll be connected to the Internet 24/7.

Cheers!

I think I read somewhere on their site that the OS needs to be a Linux even if you're using your own installation image. Of course, you could have a minimal linux installation running KVM and put Windows on top of that :P

Ah, found it. Windows server 2016 is about 21 e/month.

No you don't need no Linux if you don't want to.

You can order a KVM console anytime you want and you get it for free for up to 3 hours (and can re-order it for another three right thereafter, as many times as you want, as long as the KVM is available they will give it to you): https://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/KVM-Console/en

That way you can install your own Windows OS to the Server without having to take the license they offer.

It works, I've tested it myself.

Cheers!
