JG1_Vonrd Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 IMHO the use of "cold" engines in MP servers is unrealistic. Any ground crew worth it's salt would have normally warmed up the engine(s) prior to the crew's arrival. The pilot / crew would, at most, warm up for just a couple minutes, do a run-up / mag checks, and go on the way. Another bogus thing about "cold" engines is that they are FREEZING... even on a nice / warm day. It may have a function as a delaying factor to keep rapid re-spawns limited... Still, it bothers me. 3
FTC_DerSheriff Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 and the engines are not heating up in idle! 2
JG7_X-Man Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 (edited) You know - I think it's kind of a way to prevent us from spawning and automatically full throttle balls out down the yellow brink road into the wild blue yonder . Edited April 23, 2018 by JG7_X_Man

Yes, but why make us waste our valuable and already very limited mission time on unrealistic nonsense?

The question is, what does it? I see nothing of value. In fighters I take off anyway. With lower throttle. The thermo dynamics are not correctly modelled so realism can't be the benefit. 1 1
HenHawk Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 If this is in reference to settings on TAW, I don’t believe cold starts were put in place for any sort of realism or historical purpose. People keep trying to make the argument to have it removed because it’s not a good simulation of how cold starts are in real life and also that ground crews would have already prepped the engine. This isn’t the right argument, pretty sure most server admins and especially TAW creators now this. While it was never actually stated why cold starts were added (at least in English forum), it was likely for gaming purposes. People were running 10 minute PE2 bombing/transport missions sometimes before. Fighters could scramble at full power to stop surprise base attacks or attacks on positions close the airfields. But, have cold starts actually improved these things? I don’t know. So, the argument should be, have cold starts improved gameplay on servers like TAW? (My worthless and bomber biased opinion is no)
FTC_DerSheriff Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 I just see not a single benefit. It doesn't slow the gameplay down to a significant level. Bombers are blocking the spawns for quite some time. Its not realistic. Even if we asume that nobody heats the engine up in advance, the actual thermo dynamics are not really realistic. I dont mind that, you can't model everything. A high performance engine at idle should heat up quite fast. Like your car does in winter when you try to warm it up while you free up the windows of ice. 2

Guest deleted@103832 Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 There are ways to get around it. I can't speak for all aircraft, but I just roll at 85% ATA and 85% RPM in the JU 88 and Pe-2. Normally they heat up halfway down the runway and you can then boost to 100%.
