No plane is fully useless but some are more capable and over-engineering can hurt it. You can see the same pattern in the case of the Airacobra - fuselage got streamlined so much the turbo and inter-cooler had to be discarded. The P-63 fixed some performance issues but at cost of endurance - a dead end considering what the P-51 had to offer.
