Wolf8312 Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 (edited) Any of you guys and fellow WW2 fanatics ever play this game? If so what do you think of it? Keep meaning to go back to it. As the video shows, it really does make you feel as if you are recreating the WW2 invasion, and although the main campaign was always too overwhelming for me, you can play through smaller campaigns such as the encirclement of minsk. Although turn based, it really does a fantastic job of simulating blitzkrieg and is able to provide one with a better understanding of how it works. You breakthrough the frontline at one point, and the aim is then to push forward as deeply as possible encircling as much of the enemy as you can, and thus cutting him off from supply. It's the kind of game that makes people fall asleep just looking at it, and yet despite it's shallow appearance the game has an astonishing amount of historical, tactical and strategic detail/depth. The video might give you a better idea of what it's like. Edited April 14, 2018 by Wolf8312
InProgress Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Always wanted to buy it but turn base style just pushes me off...

I play this game and do really like it. Just like you, I am doing the smaller campaigns to get my feet wet.

Turn based has never been my go to either, (though I did like x-com2) but to be honest for a game like this with such depth, and detail I don’t honestly know how it could be anything else. And in practice I never really gave too much consideration to it being a turned base game, as you are looking at a map from which the general situation changes as time elapses, as it would in real life, rather than seeing one player hit his frozen opponent (who does nothing) during his turn and the opponent then hitting the player in the next. Somehow feels more realistic than that.. And when you think about it, from the point of view of the supreme commander looking at his military maps, war was indeed just one big turn based game! InProgress Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I prefer graviteam tactics games or Hearts of Iron 3 if we talk about bigger image

I got my hands on it quite awhile ago and I'm still looking at it sideways, waiting for the right moment. I have the same problem, but rather than attempt a full invasion of Russia you might try one of the smaller battles (road to Minsk) to get your feet wet. It is actually a very simple game to be honest, you really can just pick it up and play it without too much effort. Getting good at it, is another matter though.
NETSCAPE Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 THIS GAME DESTROYS ALL OTHER WW2 STRATEGY GAMES. (Graviteam is the best real-time, but much, much smaller in scale compared to GGWITE) The Vanilla map is CANCER. Mod that sh!t IMMEDIATELY. THAT'S AN ORDER. Second thing I do is mod my UI to be as 3rd Reich mode as possible, because I'm a wehraboo. And have fun reading a 400 page manual LOL.

The only thing about GGWITE is I am not really attracted to the idea of playing as the Russians or the Germans late in the War. How do you find the game when playing as a defender is it anywhere near as fun as a rampaging blitzkrieg? But no sorry Men of War assault squad is the best WW2 RTS I'm afraid though to be fair I never gave either GGWITE or graviteam as much of a chance! Edited April 27, 2018 by Wolf8312

It calculate every hit, soldiers have morale and can even surrender and be taken as prisoners. Fighting take place on great distances (especially in Tunis) where you wont tell your soldiers to sprint 10m and kill enemy fron the flank. I remember 1 mission in africa.. I had only infantry with trucks and maybe 3 light tanks. I was on huge open field, i decieded to make my afrika korps soldiers ride on trucks and get into the mountains from the side so i can start slow and deadly task of clearing that mountains from enemy. And i was attacked by mortar fire, they all had to jump off trucks and advance on foot, for like a 1km, under mortar fire. I send tanks on the old route to attack from side and kill mortars, and my infantry got attacked by entrenched positions of americans. On the mountain front wall. It was deadly and long battle, took me like +2h to take that side of mountain. My tanks destroyed most of mortars but i lost them because they got stuck or flipped on rocks (not good idea to send tanks into mountains) but that was really intense and great experience, you have to take big losses too, it is a war and they simulate it really good. You should really try mius front (if you like eastern front and bigger focus on infantry) or tunis 1943 if you are into tank warfare and africa. Just few great sc POW Abandoned russian tank German infantry approaching village at dawn German soldier admiring a view Infantry advance ups Evac of stug's crew Edited April 27, 2018 by InProgress
Wolf8312 Posted April 27, 2018 Author Posted April 27, 2018 Will defo try to give it another go then I found it beautiful but could never really get into it. The UI and the map screen I guess. Have you ever played MOW, perhaps you would like a game against me? Honestly I have thousands of hours in MOW it is truly an excellent multiplayer RTS, more arcade-y on the surface than graviteam but still very realistic compared to others in the genre and nail bitingly tense in MP. In fact in MP playing against a close friend it's probably the tensest and most frustrating (in a good way) game I've ever played. Very challenging. It's not company of heroes, which sucks in comparison IMO. You cannot just take out tanks by pounding away at their health bars for example, men must be in cover and you must outflank the enemy, its a game where a well placed rocket man and good recon can win the day. In this sense its still leaning more towards simulation than it is a mindless action game and all the WW2 weapons of war are there (well maybe not all) for history buffs. And graviteam is a game that is crying out for MP!
