Radio from flight leader doesn't tell me anything

If you don't know where you are, why do you expect anyone else to?

I'm actually curious about this one. In pre-flight briefings there seems to always be a mention of what the player should do if he or she loses sight of the flight lead, e.g. continue with your flight plan and patrol on your own.

I'm wondering if this is an actual historical procedure or just something done to counter AI or other practical limitations of the sim?

I really think a fully fleshed out radio system is going to do a lot for immersion in Il-2. A lot of pre-90's simulators had very robust radio call systems in place that really made you feel like you were operationally part of a unit and fighting alongside other units instead of just having the visual feedback of flying in formation and seeing other planes in action.

I really appreciate what they did with the flares though. I wasn't expecting that amount of usage when linking up with escorts - that felt very real.

Impactful communication is really going to go a long way for generating immersion.

There is a great book called 'Ten Fighter Boys' which is ten short chapters each written by a different fighter pilot during the Battle Of Britain.  It is my favourite account from that battle because it is 'Warts & All' eg they write about their screws ups as well as their triumphs.  In that there is mention of losing the flight and the response seems to be much the same as we would do in MP ie try to work out where you are,  make an effort to work out where the rest of the flight might be and catch up. If you can't then fly around a bit until you decide to give up and RTB. In the real world he would not contact Ground Control and ask them to help him find his flight.  In the BoB at least there did not seem to be a fixed procedure, or at least not one that was often followed.   If there was a policy it would probably be to RTB immediately but I would guess most pilots would find that a bit embarrassing so would try to fix the problem themselves.   In the game it makes sense to tell the pilot to continue on his own as we know exactly what route everyone is following and it makes it more likely you will see some action.

Just to add my voice:

Devs, please add separate volume control for radio communication!

Now engine sounds make radio communication completely obscured even if sound volume is maxed...

Welcomed:

- Communication subtitles separated from other messages (possibility to enable only comm subtitles).

- Choices to switch the language of radio comms (and/or subtitles) between universal English language and native pilot's language (e.g. Russian, German ,...).

- A more natural flow of communication (e.g. AI not repeating too much).

- My avatar should not speak at all.

- More actors voices.

- A choice to switch between comm channels.

The way it is currently set up you actually get some useful information from what your avatar says.

My avatar definitely should not tell me which aircraft I attack. This is maybe the most annoying thing in BOX, as it goes on and on. But I decide which aircraft I attack. If the game wants to tell me, there is an enemy near me, it could be done by a squadmate.

The only radio calls my avatar should make are the orders, I give by pressing a key of the radio menue.
