Question on the large map (o key)

So sometimes I wonder about things, and this one I have been wondering about for a while so I thought what the heck I will just ask here.

But before doing so, I did have a look through the manual and did not see anything that would answer this question.

 

Playing in the new Career Mode, I at times during the ingress or egress to the target area, will use the large map.

Now on this map, there are typically some red and blue lines with a small plane icon on them. Some of them are in like a figure 8, some of them are just straight lines.

I will see some in red, and some in blue. So obviously these are somehow representing each side.

 

What exactly does this information on the large map represent?

But seriously, I believe some of them represent the other team`s mission in your Squadron. You usually have two groups and the mission lines are for them. There`s also a line that seems to represent where spotters believe incoming fighters\bombers will be and they need to be intercepted.

 

The figure of 8 often represents CAP of your side, if Russian or German (blue) I think, although not sure why we should see the opposing side`s cap.

 

That`s my thoughts anyway.
