RedKestrel Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 Hello all, I've got an EDtracker on order for headtracking in Il-2 BoX and in anticipation of that I downloaded the software I need for it - the EDTracker GUI from their website and OpenTrack. OpenTrack is installed fine. No issues there. However, when I launch the EDTracker GUI I have a strange issue. The mouse cursor locks up and appears to encounter extreme lag - if I move it a few inches, a few seconds later the cursor flicks over to a new location. Clicking is also extremely laggy. On the EDTracker window, I can see all of the options (all grayed out) and an animation showing blue arrows pointing towards a USB port. The animation runs through one cycle, lags, then goes again. Sometimes, if I time it right, I can click and close the window, but often clicking does nothing. Launching Task Manager to try and shut it down, I can cycle through the options using arrow keys but I couldn't select any options, and the mouse remains laggy. I was unable to get Task manager to show me what was happening performance wise so I don't know if its causing a spike in processor or memory usage. If I manage to close the window everything immediately works fine. Anyone have any idea what the issue could be? I have asked the EDTracker people for assistance and got a fast response but so far they are stumped. I'm thinking it could be a few things: -EDTracker software is hunting for the tracker device and is slowing everything down or messing with the mouse, so plugging in the device would essentially solve this (don't have the tracker yet though) -my particular mouse or usb port used is messing with the software -GPU issue - my card having trouble displaying the little animation that EDTracker uses for whatever reason, which screws up the cursor somehow? -EDtracker software is installed in wrong directory, or it being 32 bit is messing up because my system is 64 bit Anyone with any experience with EDTracker who could help, it would be much appreciated. My Computer Specs: Windows 10 64 bit - fully up to date Intel i5 6500 3.4 Ghz nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 card with 3GB - not sure which driver version, will have to dig 8 GB RAM
TWC_Ace Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 (edited) i have almost identical rig and no issues with edtracker pro. Are you using wired version of edtracker? Did you properly calibrate the edtracker? It appeares as joystick under devices. If you have any issues within ed gui you can go to dev mod and click restart. Then go back to user mode and recenter. There are tons of guides online how to set up edtracker. Also on youtube. If you wish you can send me your discord link so I can guide you.. Edited April 12, 2018 by blackram
RedKestrel Posted April 12, 2018 Author Posted April 12, 2018 Sorry, I guess I didn't explain myself well. I don't have the actual EDTracker unit yet...I had just downloaded and installed the software from the website, and tried to run the software to make sure it would run before I got the actual unit. The software is just making my mouse freeze as described above. So the issue is purely software in nature. The EDTracker I have on order is the wired version but the software is the same for both. Thank you for the advice though, I will keep it in mind when I get the unit up and running. I am going to test out a couple things tonight, and hopefully hear from the EdTracker folks as well on possible issues. If I fix it I will post what did it for me. If anyone else has had similar issues, even with another piece of software, please let me know how you fixed it.
WheelwrightPL Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 EDTracker is garbage from my experience (I had two and at some point I threw them both out of sheer frustration). Get TrackIR 5, it came down in price recently and it works like a charm right out of the box with no time wasted fiddling around. Also TrackIR can follow left-right, top-bottom head movements which EDTracker cannot do.

Software is working fine with the unit on my windows 10 64 bit. 27 minutes ago, WheelwrightPL said: EDTracker is garbage from my experience (I had two and at some point I threw them both out of sheer frustration). Edtracker PRO is a great device and it works just like my Trackir 5 if not even better in some areas. With TiR I often had problems with tracking when using extreme angles in fierce dogfight (whataver angle of the camera i set I often found myself loosing tracking like my camera lost tracking due to extreme angle of my head movement). That doesnt happen with EDtracker PRO. Also no back light is messing up with tracking like in TiR (eveen filter wasnt helping as I wanted. The only and only advantage of TiR 5 over Edtracker PRO is that it has TRUE 6DOF while Edtracker can have only pseudo 6DOF which btw is working fine (I can lean left and right over my nose and tail, that is achieved with setting up actual roll movement of the head to the X axis in opentrack software). I even set my pitch movement so that I lean a bit over my nose when looking up and ducking a bit to my instrument when looking more towards my seat. And all that is super tunable in opentrack. I cant be happier with Edtacker PRO. Edited April 12, 2018 by blackram

When I looked into getting TIR5 it was going to cost me $200+ in my country, so if that has come down it would be nice but still more than twice what I paid for the EDTracker, shipping included. And I have the added problem that my setup has a lot of backlighting that I can't really do anything about, so I would be worried about TIR not working during the day or even at night with my lights on. And in any case I've solved the problem I was having! The issue was my 'gaming mouse' that came with my rig that I don't need to use anyway. When I swapped it out for an old one I had lying around, everything went back to normal. I suspect that since the software is looking for a generic game controller to interact with, it got confused about my mouse and they interfered with each other. Obviously I can't actually do anything with the software yet as I don't have the unit, but it launches now and that's one less thing I have to worry about when doing the actual setup. So, if anyone else has a similar problem launching the EDTracker software, try a mouse swap before anything else drastic! Edited April 12, 2018 by RedKestrel
RedKestrel Posted April 20, 2018 Author Posted April 20, 2018 Well, I've received my EdTracker and gotten it all set up. No problem at all with the software, either the EdTracker GUI or Opentrack. I wasn't able to download the latest update to Il-2 BoX, so so far I have only tried it in Il-2 1946. Overall it's very good, smooth, responsive. I get some unintended motion but I think that is due to how I have it mounted on my headset. I've had a few issues with the yaw becoming unresponsive when I try to look too far behind me, but I managed to rectify that with some curve changes and tweaks in the software. It's really funny how much I moved my head when playing without realizing it...I found out that every time i go to shoot I tilt my head slightly to the right. No issues without head tracking, but with it my head moves sideways and rolls slightly just as I pull the trigger lol. At first I thought it was the tracker but it turned out it was me! With some creative use of OpenTrack and some relative translation I have 'Pseudo 6DOF' so I can peak around the bars and duck down into the cockpit to see behind gunsights, etc. Had a bit of a panic when my cat got tangled in the usb cable and broke one of the connectors last night, but a new cable was found and no problems now with the unit. With this being my first foray into head tracking I have a lot of tweaking to do to find my sweet spot. I'll try and post a full-on review once I've ironed out my own inexperience and any tweaks to curves etc.
TWC_Ace Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 We all needed few weeks to get fully used to head tracking. It will be natural later believe me. You wil enjoy.
