Trying to go from a 970 to a 1080.  The 970 uses two 6 pin power inputs.  The 1080 uses a single 8 pin.  My power supply is an EVGA Supernova NEX7506.  It uses six pin connectors on the power supply side and (as noted) provides six pin outputs to the GPU.

I tried plugging a single 6 pin into the 1080 but it did not supply enough power.   It did manage to display on the monitor "plug your power cable into the GPU", so there must have been some power going through the GPU.

I can get a dual 6 pin to 8 pin adapter cable from ebay.  Seems like my best bet.

Got a tip that the two six pins could be made into 4 pins and used in the 1080, but the connectors do not look right.

Any ideas?  Am I the proud owner of a NvIdia 1080 door stop?

Put on some light classical music and then play it safe by putting the 980 back in and await the adaptor from ebay.

Yeah, adapter looks the best bet.

I changed to a 1080 recently, from a 730, so took the opportunity to put in a modular power supply which provides a bunch of interchangeable cable/connectors. If your PS is old, that might be an option.

So the 1080 is back in the box.  Cable is purchased.  Hope it works.  Seems that it should.

If I have to replace the power supply I hate to think of what sort of compatibility hell I'm going to get into.

Patrick, you contribute so much to the community... Do you need someone to assist in purchase of a new power supply? I am willing to help out.

Edit - I also just looked at my 1080, which has a 6 pin and 8 pin connector. You must have one of the compact versions that has less power requirement?

I can't find EVGA Supernova NEX7506.

Is that a EVGA Supernova NEX 750 G?

This one is modular and it should also have 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors (so look in the power supply box for those extra cables).

Yes this, if it is modular the proper 6+2 pin connectors should be included .

If not then I should think that adapter will work fine.

The machine is almost three years old.  There are no extra cables although there are unused ports on the power supply.  It's old enough that all of the ports are six pin and not 8 pin.  There may be a six pin to 8 pin cable that I can buy but I doubt that it would work.  It would still effectively be a single six pin output and I already know that that is not enough to power the 1080.  If it took two 6 pin outputs to power the 970 then I can only hope that the same will power the 1080.

The dual six pin to 8 pin adapter is on order.  We'll see in a week if it works.

That is weird, this machine I built is over 4 years old ( will be 45 in Dec), and the power supply I got for it (Corsair) has all the ports I need along with the extra modular cables.

I would have thought EVGA power supply would have as well.

They do offer several cables:

Cable arrived and all  is well.  1080 is running and doing what I had hoped it would do.  Thanks for the input all.
