black_heart Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 First post! ~ I love the direction BOS is going! I just wish there was more server uptime. As odd as it may seem, I don't have any time on the weekends! So i've logged maybe 1 hour of flight time since the end of November. Most of my free time is during the week. So is there any planned full time authentication servers planned for the near future? I've been trying to look around to see if this was mentioned before. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to why we can't have a full time auth server? I could see not keeping a QMB server up full time this early, but the auth server can't be doing much other than checking credentials and logging activity right? Just seems odd to only have access to the game for 2 days a week. I wish I had more free time during those 2 days....
FuriousMeow Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Well the previous access period was a weeklong, and the one prior t0 that was 3 or 4 days. Originally it was during the week only, and many a person complained because they wanted it on the weekends. Eventually full time access, but for now limited access with the primary point to test and report bugs/issues. No one but the devs know the reason to keep limited access, but the majority of games that go "early access" do so for limited time frames or don't even have access to anything except for a single module that allows nothing to be done with it.Even if we knew the answer why, it wouldn't matter because it still will be limited until the early access goals have been met to allow unlimited access. black_heart Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 Thanks. Yeah, I couldn't really do much over the past week due to the holidays. We were out of town for the week. Oh well. You can't please everyone I guess.
Lextor Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) I can't understand why it is done so. Because the game doesn't have multiplayer or matchmaking system, the client is fully autonomous for now, you don't need a server to play. You only need to go through the login procedure on the authorization server to START playing. After that you can keep the game launched forever. Why do they need to disable login server for a few days, I don't understand. I'm a game developer with 12 years of experience and I don't see see any reason for this. May be I could understand if it was MMO game, or a server-hosted game.. But in fact we were just not allowed to fly without any logical reason. Well, I can accept it, even without explanation. But then take a little more care of your founders. I was surprised by the fact that there is no access time schedule. We are not children who must to wait for a gift from Santa Claus. We are adults, we all have jobs, families, we need to plan our time. I was expecting a more professional attitude in this regard. Edited January 10, 2014 by Lextor 2
Finkeren Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I'm not sure about this, but could the reason be, that they're running stress tests of the authentication server for a set period of time?
Rama Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I was surprised by the fact that there is no access time schedule. There is, and it was annouced in the dev diaries: 72h every WE from Friday night to Monday, this until further notice that will modify the schedule. Only exception was the 1 week period during new year hollidays. And now, you have a reminder of it in The early Access sub-forum FAQ thread (that will be updated by Zak at each new session).
J4SCrisZeri Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I still don't understand the limited timeframes. What's the server work? I thought it was to identify users and grant access to their purchased copy of BoS, then maybe keeping statistics and stuff We're not playing multiplayer online yet Why do programmers fear some server overload at this stage? I don't mean to sound polemic, just admitting my total ignorance about this subject. Thank you for any info.
Rama Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I still don't understand the limited timeframes. I don't understand them either, and I don't try (it's dev's business, if they say they need to shutdown the server, then they need it). That's life, we're just humans and don't know everything.
Foobar Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Guys, you don't have to understand, it wouldn't change anything. Developers have their reasons to decide that way. Just take it as it is.
Georgio Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Maybe they only have one main server and need to setup and test the new build on it and this can't be done properly when you have 5k players hanging off it. Who knows either way it's their train set; we should be happy (I know I am) that we can muck about with it more early than we should have. End of story.
Lextor Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Of course it makes no sense to wonder about it. I just wish that they added a big timer on the main page with a countdown to the next session. Then we would not have to guess, and people would not create threads "why can't I connect to the game" on a regular basis. 1
FuriousMeow Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 The reasons for those threads is because no one reads the forum or searches anything. It's the same with trim, that topic is repeated ad nauseum but a simple forum search will yield the answers. The forum has a search for a reason, no need to post a topic until the forum as been searched to verify an answer doesn't already exist.

Don't mean to sound rude here but you could just READ the Dev Blog every week. If everyone did this (as many many of us do) there would be no more threads asking when can I play. Just a thought.......

I'm not interested in exchange of views on something good. If it is good, it does not require discussion. I go to the forum to discuss the problems, or the facts that I don't like. Actually, I always read the developers blog. If there was the schedule of access time for weeks ahead.. well I forgot it. What do I do, reread 47 blog pages? Access shedule is a very important thing, you see, so why not put it on public display in a more accessible place? Edited January 10, 2014 by Lextor
thx1138 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 All ya have to do is check every Friday, it's there in the latest dev diary. You also could sign up for email alerts when something new happens.
J4SCrisZeri Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 yes, reading the blog carefully is for sure a good idea anyway I still think a banner or similar system would be immediate: red light: server down - green light:serverup and running no matter what's the time in Rome, Helsinki, Honolulu or Detroit. The devs update that, everybody knows what's happening, period. Oh yes, then we'd get zillions of topics by new users who didn't read the FAQ about what the red/green banner means
