[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Hey all, new cards are coming out soon and I’m not too tech savvy on card differences only that the number gets higher the better the card... i have a gtx970 was gonna throw money into a 1070ti.. but with new cards I’m hesitant... what are are some thoughts/concerns compared to our now 10series to the 11series coming out for gaming?
CanadaOne Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Haven't heard much about the cards, but between the ASIC machines designed specifically for crypto currency mining (much faster than video cards), and some of the coins losing value, the price of cards is either coming down now or might be coming down soon. The EVGA 1060 I bought for $275 last October peaked at $500+ this year and now is available for $375. Let them coins crash!

It was a month out of warranty and they refused to send a replacement. "No proooblem," thought I, "I`ll just buy another one!" I nearly fell through the floorboards when I saw the prices for the same basic thing! Did some research on why the prices were so ridiculously high and found out about this crypto bs. All i can say is I made the right decision getting an Intel i5 cpu with its own onboard graphics - It kept me going until I could afford a new decent card. Even there I couldn`t get the 8 gig card I wanted... had to settle for 6. Edited April 8, 2018 by seafireliv 1
Warpig Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 If you're 1080p, there's no reason not to be patient and wait for the new cards. The 970 should be getting along just fine.
ShamrockOneFive Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Seeing as I'm finding my GTX 960 2GB is not able to do as much as I'd like it to recently, I've been looking into new cards and its a tough thing right now with the prices still high. They are dropping thanks goodness as the crypto currency craze begins to diminish and more specialized hardware becomes available in that area. The rumours are right now that it may be the 11 series or the 20 series (i.e. GTX 2060) and there are good suggestions that they will be using the Volta architecture currently in use by the nVidia Titan V. There are also good rumours that nVidia will be using GDDR6 VRAM this time around as production is getting set to ramp up on GDDR6 chips. The release dates are looking like Q3 2018 right now. That is hearsay and I wouldn't put too much stock in it but those are best guesses. Hopefully prices remain around MSRP and don't go fully insane.
Dave Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Latest info on the next gen cards from Nvidia is: - name will be GTX 11x0 with the top end being the 1180 at launch; - 12nm process Turing architecture for gaming cards and Ampere for HPC (Nvidia architecture is diverging and specialising); - both will use GDDR6 - probably in 8GB and 16GB configurations (based on leaked info from Hynix); - should be announced at the conference in Taipei in June; - should start shipping in late July; - due to the higher production cost of GDDR6 expect about a 20% price hike over the same relative level 10 series cards. (I expect higher prices due to all the intolerable bandwagon-chasing crypto-currency noobs) I would have bought a Titan V already if I thought it would yield any improvement with BoX, but TBH my 1080Ti isn't being fully utilised as is. The CPU bottleneck is what needs to be resolved.
Gambit21 Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 There's nothing to say about the new cards yet other than quoting specs - they're not here yet.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 IL 2 is throttled by processor power, server performance and connection bandwidth afaik. I wouldn't know why to upgrade my gtx1080 at the moment.
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted April 8, 2018 Author Posted April 8, 2018 So probably best thing to do then would be to upgrade cpu and ramthen

Your 1080 can easily be brought to it's knees.
CanadaOne Posted April 9, 2018 Posted April 9, 2018 I would love to get a 1070 to go with a new 144 screen, but that kind of expenditure is months away. For the moment, my 3GB 1060 is just fine.

Most of us can`t justify paying so much for what`s basically a game peripheral when only half a year ago it cost £100 less. 2
PatrickAWlson Posted April 9, 2018 Posted April 9, 2018 I just sprang for a 1080 ($620 at Newegg). My 970 is a pretty darned good card foe everything I want to do - except VR. Prices are coming down, both because of crypto losses and saturation as well as the looming introduction of the next generation. If you can wait, it is probably a good idea. Foe me the decision to buy now was prompted by the cost being low enough ... and I really want to experience proper VR. 2

I've been watching my performance levels carefully since 3.001 came out to figure out what's going on when my frame rate or perceived game smoothness drops off. I've got a Core i5 6600, 8GB DDR4 RAM (with fairly aggressive timings can't remember off the top of my head), GTX 960 2GB, etc. etc. Of the issues that I'm having I see the GPU being worked to about 80-90% most of the time but what really causes issues is the VRAM. That's when it gets choppy. That and my system RAM I'm finding is frequently at 7.9 GB. So RAM upgrades are simple and easy and I'll be doing that the next time there's a sale and while GPU upgrades are simple... The price is not so easy. Even RAM prices are high. When I bought my system 3 years ago the DDR4 memory sticks were down around the $90 CDN mark. Now its a $150 for the same pair.

I rather wait for the 11xx series. maybe they iron out those glitches. At least some of those. P3D v4 has no problem maxing out my 1080 @1440p, so more kick would be welcome there. For BoX, the 1080 is never maxed.

From reading dozens of post and from personal expirience i can confirm, GPU performance is less importand than CPU regarding high and constant fps (esp. in VR). Alot of people upgraded to 1080 cards and where underwelmed by the fps gains.

BeastyBaiter Posted April 9, 2018 Posted April 9, 2018 (edited) In your case, keep the 970 and replace everything else. For monitor gaming, you can get away on an extremely tight budget. For a budget build, I recommend the Ryzen 5 2600G, a good B350 motherboard, 16GB DDR4 3000+ memory and a ~500GB SSD. Total price of that is around $495 USD including a 480GB SSD on newegg using only good quality components. That's actually cheaper than trying to get a GTX 1070, which will be obsolete in a few months. Exact parts list here, some of it is on sale: CPU + mobo combo deal: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3771297 RAM: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232298&ignorebbr=1 SSD: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220916&ignorebbr=1 As an added bonus, the Ryzen 5 2600G has integrated graphics (Vega 11) that are over twice as fast as Intel's latest and greatest. That's not terribly relevant since your GTX 970 is still vastly faster, but it is there and of note. The reason I recommend the 2600G (4 cores 8 threads) instead of the similarly priced R5 1600 (6 cores, 12 threads) is because of memory latency. Ryzen 2 will also be released later this month. Main selling points are 200-300MHz more clock speed and reduced memory latency (2600G already has this part). Edited April 9, 2018 by BeastyBaiter

Just asking because under EU regs you should have a 2 year warranty and I've seen some places try to pass off a 1 year warranty. von Tom

This was the first graphics card to ever fail me and my first AMD. Even my Voodoo3 2000 still works! Edited April 9, 2018 by seafireliv

The ancient CPU is the problem. Buy a Ryzen CPU + motherboard + DDR4 RAM and keep everything else (GPU, power supply, case, etc.). This will give you smooth performance at 1080p with most graphics options set to high.
BeastyBaiter Posted April 9, 2018 Posted April 9, 2018 Hmm, who made your R9 390? I've had dozens of GPU's over the years and only ever had one fail, it was an Nvidia card by XFX (many years ago). I normally only keep a GPU 2-3 years though.

I built my rig last summer buying a piece every two-weeks or so until I had them all, then threw it together. What made it affordable was I got a socket 1151 MB and then put in the cheapest CPU I could get - a dual core 3.3 Ghz G4400 Skylake for $60 - as a placeholder until I could afford an i5. When I got the I5, I took out the G4400 and just dropped in the i5, took five-minutes, and that was that. If you decide to go that route and get an 1151 MB, let me know and I'll send you my G4400 CPU and you can use it as a placeholder until you score a better CPU. It's almost new, in the box, and has the heatsink. You might want to redo the thermal paste. The G4400 is surprisingly capable for a cheapo CPU. Light years better than the dual core E6700 at 2.6Ghz it replaced.
BeastyBaiter Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 1151 is the socket type, it doesn't tell you if the motherboard is compatible with the G4400.

Basically multicore optimisation in BoX is pretty poor to non-existant and hardware innovation moved to massively parallel a few years ago. 13 hours ago, ShamrockOneFive said: Seconded that GPU is going to be the bigger issue. I think the biggest issue for you is that 2GB is not enough VRAM to hold all the required textures on the card, so bandwidth is being wasted pushing textures from RAM to your GPU. I think 8GB is almost a minimum for fluid rendering now with many titles, BoX included. A 1080Ti will be plenty good enough and if you hold off about 3 months the price will drop by about 50%.
