fran1942 Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Hello, is it necessary to use the keyboard when playing Battle for Moscow in Virtual Reality ? I ask because I have been disappointed with 'Elite Dangerous' which requires regular keyboard interaction i.e. a nuisance to take off headset to look at the keyboard. Or is there a basic flight mode in 'Battle for Moscow' which only requires a joystick and joysytick buttons to play ? Thanks for any advice.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Hotas, with many axis, and enough buttons. Can you solder? Get a damaged x55 or 56 for few on ebay, repair it, win.
SAG Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 And yes, there is also a Basic flight mode which can use just a few buttons on your joystick. a HOTAS like mentioned above is better in my opinion though
Lensman Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 It entirely depends on how many assignable controller buttons you have available. You DO need to activate many inputs and if you can fit them on to your controllers then that's very much best. It IS an issue but not a major problem.
dburne Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Agree, a good HOTAS can greatly reduce and even eliminate the need for the keyboard whilst flying. I use a Virpil T-50 stick, Warthog Throttle, and CH Throttle Quadrant ( for extra axis and buttons). I also have Voice Attack for wingmen commands. Whilst flying in Il-2 I rarely have a need to look at the keyboard.

But have you ever thought about using Voice Attack with an HCS voice for Elite? I use personalised Astra and as one of my friends confirmed, I never have to touch the keyboard unless I actually want to. p.s. Voice Attack also works with IL2BOS. Edited April 8, 2018 by seafireliv

I would but to be honest I find Elite too tedious to play especially in VR with a headset on, as its a game that requires hours upon hours of just flying through space without much ever happening. I really loved Elite arena but can never seem to get a game on it.

I have a 9 button joystick + hat and I play in expert, where I need to manage water radiator and oil radiator. I use UCR to setup button to keys shortcuts, with two shift keys (I can therefore map 3* ( 7 + 4(hat)) = 33 functions ) . It works great now but I have to admit it was awfully painful to setup. It does not work well with shifted keys so I had to find a workaround using ahk code. If you are interested I can give you my setup. There is another thread about this topic:

You haven`t even taken a step out the front door, m8, not even the front room. Times that by 10 and you`ll only just have begun! The problem I think is you`re forced online and you can`t save and come back mid-job. For instance, you take a job to take a guy somewhere- It has to be done in real time. And often the job takes hours, days even weeks, depending. All real time. With a flight sim it`s one mission over in say an hour or 2 at most. Done for that session. I probably wouldn`t have bothered with it had I realised it was so restrictive- I also didn`t realise that Solo Single Player was forced Online. I don`t like games that force me Online if I`m playing single player. I usually steer away from them with IL2 being a special exception.

Agree completely BOS is perfect for VR, the duration of the missions combined with a headset are just about right, and by the time I’ve finished a mission I’m ready to take off the HMD and have a rest. Elite however is a game that feels fantastic but I just find it so lacking in content and real depth. They badly need to make it into a game of some kind that people can drop in and out of and just have fun, but you need a good ship to compete which means unavoidable grinding and tedious fetch quests. Theres just no personalization or characterization of the world itself, but it’s a game I really badly want to love, as like I said in VR it feels fantastic. If only people actually played arena as that was a truly fantastic experience. Sigh!

Still undecided on this one, but have not been devoting much time to it either - having way too much fun in the new IL-2 Career Mode.

Yeah before the I-L update I was finding it very difficult to drag myself away from helicopter flying in DCS. Now however BOS has got me well and truly hooked. It wasnt just the update either as learning to navigate properly also played a big part in my conversion, as whereas before I found missions rather tedious (IE waiting to get to a mission point and then waiting to get home) now I find it very challenging and immersive just trying to work out how to get to the target and back again. The sense of accomplishment when you arrive at a distant target successfully is a satisfaction beyond measure! I'm also loving the 'scripted campaign' content, and have found alot of missions made by the good people of this forum, some of which seems incredibly proffesional. This sim has certainly come a long way in a few years! Do you fly iron man dburne? Love the campaign as well though I don't tend to survive very long!
