If you find a way to fix it, please notify the devs. They have struggled with this since they introduced new clouds to replace the ones from RoF way back during BoS development in 2013/14.

I read that anti aliasing do not work properly. Or I heard someone read it, so I can not confirm. Try to switch off AA and see what happens

It works fine. The issue is, that the plane models’ and the clouds’ AA is different and out of synch (or something to that effect - I’m not well versed in the terminology) and the result is that unsightly mess.

According to Jason, using the same AA for planes amd clouds absolutely kills frame rates, so there is no easy solution that won’t drastically lower performance.

A possible explanation:

The issue you are describing looks something to do with the game not rendering the clouds in at the correct depth. I'm guessing the clouds are some very fancy volumetric effects that aren't rendered to the z-buffer in the same way that geometry is and they are being rendered over the top of the planes at a certain z depth.

Perhaps the best illustration of the issue (I reported it recently).

I hope this is fixed soon... I love flying through the clouds... it kills the fun a bit...

there was at one point this problem did not happen, but then it came back after an earlier update...

I am pretty sure Jason has already stated that not much can be done currently regarding this particular issue with the clouds.

I have little doubt if they could do something sooner, they certainly would. After all this sim is their baby, and I am sure they do not like seeing that affect on the plane around the clouds either, or the stuttering of the clouds as they move.

It seemed to me that it helped a lot (for the stuttering) when I switched HDR off.

It is not at all necessary for a great image, so everyone might try it out.

True indeed...  perhaps one of the 40 improvements coming up will surprise us?!

I entered the scene just one year ago and I don't remember that I ever had this issue prior to 3.001. I tried out everything I could, including Coconut's mod, but nothing helped. As I see I'm not alone with this issue, and if it depended on me, I would return to the less spectacular old clouds till the issue is fixed. After all, I'm here to shoot at good-looking planes, not to watch nice clouds.

That's what I had read too and IL-2 isn't the only flight related product to suffer from this. It's somewhat prominent in War Thunder too.

It's like drawing money from the bank. If you have the VRAM and GPU power to spend then you can turn all of the features on and if not then you have to turn a few off.

HDR I find causes little increase or decrease in stuttering but 2X (or higher) landscape detail and sharpening now cause quite a lot.

Unfortunately none of these settings make the issues with pixelated aircraft infront of clouds any better. It's magnified on lower detail settings but High/Ultra still has it.
