Well, now I've done it

I was going to put it off until summer, but that sale was just too tempting, and I got some 'mad money' that was burning a hole in my pocket...

Just got Battle of Stalingrad and Battle of Moscow (Standard). Too good of a deal to pass up! I'd really have loved to get Kuban but I'm going to hold off as my rig is decidedly mid-range and I've heard the Kuban map is a little resource intensive. I want to see how things run in Stalingrad/Moscow before I commit there.

Now I'm just waiting for my EdTracker to come and complete my setup...I can hear the I-16 calling me even now...

Congats! You will have a ton of fun!

I guess I should note that my rig looks like this:
Intel Core i5 7500 3.4 ghz
NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
8 GB of Ram

So, above the minimum specs, but not a beast by any stretch of the imagination. I think I'll work my way up from low settings lol.

I`m waiting for the LA5 fn sale.

the Battle of Stalingrad is really good... the Battle of Moscow didn't really add anything to the Battle of Stalingrad so I was disappointed....but I'm happy to say that the Battle of Kuban does add some significant landscape improvements such as mountains and hills.... it is really beautiful just to look out the window as you fly over the Russian countryside.  Also, you get two of the finest fighters of WW2.... the FW190A-5.... and the Spitfire..... they are awesome to fly... and the FW's firepower is stunning.... hit your opponent directly and it shatters his plane, wings coming off,  sometimes into a fireball...  I was also pleasantly surprised with the AirCobra.... its guns and maneuverability out classes the P-40 in which I"ve been disappointed, although I do fly it sometimes.... the designers will always match enemies with the plane you choose to fly so a P-40 is up against a BF109E for instance which makes it an even battle.  The Spitfire is up against the FW 190.... and that is a very very interesting combat scenario.  Usually I try to get on the tail of my opponent and catch up to him cutting across his turns, but it is very interesting in the quick mission builder to fly an FW 190 with the extra cannons against 4 or 5 slow bombers and try to attack from the side or head on which demands a lot more skill.  The best add on is still Autumn (BF 109 F-2) , though Blazing Steppes is OK (YAK).... the new Dragon add on (IL-2) is poor.  I hope their next add on group of missions (since I don't have a fast enough server to be a Multiplayer) will be with the Spitfire or the FW 190... they are the two best planes of WW2 except possibly the Mustang which I look forward to flying in their next addition.... Just a note.... I bought Battle of Kuban 4 months ago, to help fund the developers, and it was no problem to download it thru Steam... the key is in your profile after you buy it and Steam recognizes the key.  Battle of Kuban allows you to fly 8X normal speed so you don't have to sit as long before you're at the battleground.  That's also an improvement.  I still would like the designers to program in re-armenent  and re-fuel of your plane when you land so you can take-off again and continue your battle.  Is that in Multiplayer already?  If they are offering Battle of whatever to be purchased early... I will do that to support the designers, and will buy any new add-on missions.

My rig is almost identical and I run on max settings (granted, 1080p) at 50-60fps.
Kuban knocks it down by 15, but the performance bugs are being ironed out, which should make the game a lot more playable.

So your rig is just fine!

Welcome to the community by the way! Happy flying!

Likewise, my system is almost identical and I'm running at Ultra, although on an ageing (though still good) 1680x1050 Samsung monitor which probably aids things a little.

Had to reduce a few settings (shadows, landscape distance and detail, mirrors) but only by one or two notches.

As mentioned Kuban is more challenging on the settings, but depending on what resolution screen you are running, for Stalingrad/Moscow start at the higher end and reduce as necessary.

lol worry not. I have:

Intel core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66 ghz

Radeon 5770 1GB

4 GB ram

And on low i can play with 50-60 fps on 2000m alt, 30 fps on the ground. Moscow and stalingrad works great, only kuban is not very good, 15-20fps.

Maybe because it happend before stalingrad? :P It's diffrent map, if you play on expert there is big difference, lots of forests and swamps, while stalingrad is just empty stepes. Big difference in navigation. Also early war with older machines. You also get huge city to look at

Kind of shame that you cant fly there too close...

Just as a reference.  I only have the 1050Ti which is way below the 1060 and I run most things on 'High' and have it capped at 60fps which it always maintains even over Kuban.  I do have 16Gb of RAM though so maybe that helps.     I see DCS has just announced that there is nothing wrong with the performance on their new maps,  it is just that the minimum spec for a high load map is now 32Gb

Welcome RedKestrel ... this simulator is an amazing work of art, I hope you get as much pleasure as I do from it.

32 gig! That`s the first game\sim i`ve seen needing so much ram. I have 16 gig also and yes, it really helps not just in IL2 but pretty much every game out there. that`s why I believe we can often get almost as good performance with a lesser system than others do with a higher performing system if they have less ram.

Yep, with an i5 3570k, 8gb Ram and a 1080 I can't play dcs anymore.

I thought that we can't fly over Moscow ? How did you do this ?

Thanks everyone for the rig advice. I feel a little better now!

All I know is that on il-2 1946 I still can't fly low over Leningrad or Berlin on max settings, it crashes. I think that may be an issue with the game engine though, moreso than anything else.

Yea, I think that`s a game engine issue. Berli/Leningrad was always a problem. I should give it a run again to see if it`s improved on my specs now...

You can fly close enough to see the city, you just cant fly into it. It's a shame tho.
