thanks

If it works without any tinkering and has good performance I will buy one.

Good luck and enjoy.  I look forward to your review.  Did you have an existing HMD?

I suspect vive pro will work fine.  The ecosystem is identical to vive and I suspect the IPD issue is not related to resolution.

Well thats what I thought when I made the bet keep me posted!

Well, I just got my Vive Pro. Setup was very quick, replace the switch box, hook up the HMD...let the Win10 do the setup (detecting new hardware etc). Then I turned on SteamVR and went into Video, manual override for the application and bumped up the super sampling to 200%. Started up Project Cars 2......and....WOOOW!!!! Man, everything much more clear and sharp!!! Did a quick 30 minutes race Le mans with MB AMG GT3 and jesus the graphics are great, virtually no screen door effect. It text is now very easy to read, everything is much sharper, the road, the other cars...my cockpit. I'm in totally in love!!! I wear glasses and with Vive Pro is easier to put on and wear than the original Vive. Everything was supper smooth, of course having 2 x Titan Xp in SLI is helping a lot. Next test will be Elite Dangerous but just from 30 minutes testing Vive Pro in Project Cars 2, the upgrade was definitely worth it for me. From my personal point of view: Vive Pro is very nice upgrade and I don't have any regrets for the price (sure it would be nice cheaper but it is what it is; I spent $600 for cougar stick...so it's not that far off). I can't wait to try IL2 sturmovik and DCS.

I haven't tried the included speakers as I have 5.1 sound system hooked up to my computer so I would actually prefer to take them off.

Cheers!

Indeed you do!  Unfortunately, I am away until Friday night, no report from me until Saturday.

Delighted to hear you are enjoying your experience, it is similar to mine when I first tried a Samsung Odyssey.  Please try IL2 BoX next and let us know if you get scaling issues.

I thought VR had no benefit from SLI, has that changed with the Vive Pro?

Also what are the rest of your system specs?

I'm pretty sure everyone reading this post is thinking the same thing. That was a mean trick posting your results for every OTHER game to the BoX forum. :)

Yeah that is odd, to the OP are you having trouble making it run properly in IL2?

I am starting to think that.

Or is working soo good you dont wanna stop to report your results :)

VR SLI at this point has to be implemented at an application level. Project Cars 2 does utilize SLI.

i7 6850K (running at 4Ghz) , ASUS X99-DELUXE II motherboard, 64GB of Ram

So, I just finished testing Elite Dangerous and I have to say I'm in love with Vive Pro, it's like a new game experience for me :) I have no doubts that IL2 Sturmovik  and DCS will be a positive experience , I will try that next.

Interesting, as I always understood it would work for monitor play but not for VR HMD.

Course I could have understood wrong as well.

It's easy, take out the Vive switch box,  pug in the Vive Pro and go to steamVR settings and don't to automatic scaling for the resolution so that you can do it yourself. At this point I'm running 100% scaling in SteamVR and the set the supersampling at 2.0 in IL2, Elite Dangerous, Project Cars 2 etc.

No, that’s not what I meant.  I won’t be home for two days.

So you are the news source on if my new expensive headset is something to look forward to in il2.  I also have a IPD bet to win or lose!

Posted (edited)

I think he means, it's in his house and he isn't :)

He bought a Vive Pro specifically because he was unhappy at the scaling issues with his Samsung Odyssey.

Doh! :D Redcoat just replied clarifying this.

Insert other media

This is what we mean when we are talking about the IPD issue.  Basically it's like you are in a small scale aircraft with the IPD bug in BOX.  Scaling is perfectly fine in DCS and other games.

Please test by comparing to your older vive experience in BoX to the new Vive Pro.   Also compare BoX to DCS for example in similar cockpits (Spitfire for example)

VR-SLI is only supported in a small number of games at the moment (Project Cars, Duke Nuke'um, a few others) although it was originally announced by Nvidia 2 years ago. The adoption rate has been so low because application developers have to implement the Nvidia API within their code. At present, few developers have invested the time to learn and implement the VRWorks SLI API.

May be crazy and I am the prince of placebo but is anyone else noticing a performance boost with the new steam VR update? I seem to be getting lower frames and better smoother performance. Clouds also seem to look better with less shimmering.

Check Steam VR hasn't set your super-sampling to auto and pushed it lower.

No I pushed it higher actually! Which may explain the clouds...

Nah unless I was just lucky the last two times I played its not placebo for me. There was a strange flickering/stuttery (not an actual stutter though) effect that was not FPS related and is now seemingly absent especially when rolling the AC around. Everything is also much clearer and less blury. May have just been a bug that the update has fixed though clouds are still horrible without the mod.

Ok, I just about 30 minutes flying in IL2. As in Project Cars 2, Elite Dangerous the visual upgrade is obvious and I'm very pleased. It's so easy now to see and read the instrument panels, the visual quality upgrade makes it more immersive overall experience. I have all settings maxed out, no HUD in VR, visibility was set to 50km. I did a few quick missions with two flights vs two flight dogfights and it was fun. I just recently updated the game to v3 (the latest) and I haven't been flying for a while so I don't remember my warthog setup so I just did the quick missions in the air. I'm very pleased with the results. I did not have any issues. I'm not sure if IL2 support VR SLI...now I'm going to try DCS but overall I'm very happy with Vive Pro. Works right out of the box, SteamVR detected the HMD and everything went with the setup. I took of the headphones from the HMD as I prefer to use my 5.1 sound system for games and when my own head phones when needed, they were easy to remove. Zero negative feedback :)

Cheers!

If it does work as BlackJaguar states then this is good news (sorta).  It means the issue is not due to resolution but down to how BoX VR code works... or doesn't as the case may be.  I have no doubt whatsoever that the problem is with BoX and not with Steam VR.

Now we need to wait for the devs to fix how BoX works in VR.  I remind people, BoX is the ONLY VR game that suffers from these scaling issues.

Redcoat, I look forward to your own feedback on the Vive Pro as you have experienced this issue and will be able to instantly tell if it is fixed.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, even with the original Vive I never had problem sitting in the Bf-109 (that's all I fly to be honest). I flew without plane labels and I didn't have problem recognizing enemy planes.

Yep that is certainly good news for those upgrading to the Vive Pro. I know there was a lot of concern if it was going to behave like the Odyssey and scaling be all off.

Nice that you are able to get that good a performance with all settings maxed ( assuming Ultra Pre-Set) with the increase  in resolution.

Well so far we have Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, apparently it seems Vive Pro, and Pimax 4k that have all worked I believe without the scaling issue.

So apparently there is something with these WMR devices that is having the issue with scaling and IL-2. Strange.

How many stations are needed for the Vive Pro and fly Il2 with no problems?

I./JG53_BlackJaguar
Posted

Just like the original Vive, only two stations are needed and the original stations v1.0 will do . The cool thing about Vive from my point of view is that I have two base stations running and I and my wife and we both have Vive HMDs in the room playing game at our desks and the two stations are supporting both of us just fine. Now all we need a cool app that we can both playing together in VR...hmmm.

No, that's not what they are asking about. There is a reported issue that seems to occur with the Windows Mixed Reality Headsets like the Samsung Odyssey which causes an issue in-game so that the cockpit appears to be mis-proportioned in all planes. It does not occur with the Rift or Vive and if everything seems to be the proper scale with your headset then that would indicate that it doesn't occur with the Vive Pro either which is good news for many people that have been considering the upgrade.

You can read about the issue with the Samsung Odyssey here, some people were worried that the same issue might occur with the Vive Pro due to it having the same native resolution as the Odyssey.

I hope this doesn't come across as aggressive but this statement is perplexing because we have demonstrated for months what the issue is with WMR and Pimax and PSVR when used in BoX.  IPD gets doubled in startup.cfg, so if you have an IPD of 63 it get's doubled to 128 by BOX, NOT by Steam because EVERY other Steam VR game I have gives perfect scaling on my Odyssey.  We cannot manually edit the IPD in startup.cfg because BoX overrides it automatically.

Vive Pro is using the Vive ecosystem which proves exactly that the issue isn't resolution.  To be fair most already expected as much considering DK2 worked fine on the Oculus ecosystem.  Pimax 4k does not work and gives black bars on the binocular overlap area (IPD issues perhaps).

So logically if the ONLY sim software that uses Steam VR and gives these IPD issues across a range of HMDs is BoX.  It is clear the issue lies with BoX and not WMR, Pimax, PSVR etc.

Many thanks for your GREAT NEWS!!!!!  ( we know you prefer ProjectCars and ED over IL-2....  ;))

It is great to have a better working alternative to the Rift/Vive even at that price, but many of us have spent a fair amount of money in HOTAS, Seats, GPUS, etc, etc.

I think I will sell my Rift and I will go to the Vive Pro as soon as it is available in the European HTC webpage.

Nothing is in the 1-year horizon from Oculus for PC, so one year of better resolution with IL-2 is worth the investment for me.

Ordered!

In Europe it´s sold at 879€ including standard shipping. Price is 726€ and 152€ is taxes.

I have one Vive base station v1.0, so I hope it is enough for a seat experience.

BTW, I am selling my Rift with Touch and 2 sensors, anyone around Spain I can give a good price. Send me a PM if interested.
