ThudThunder Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Hello! I am looking for tips for landing softer in the tail dragger's. I find it very hard to land smoothly, and sometimes to even land safely. If I come in steep, I bounce right back up, if I come in low, I carry too much speed, for both flaring does not seem to help very much but to slam the plane into the ground. Am I coming in too dirty? I usually approach with full flaps, maybe I should try to bring them back? Just wondering how anyone does it so I can improve my technique. Thank you!
SKG51_robtek Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 (edited) It has been said already quite a few times how to land in BoS. For the 109: approach the runway with ca. 170 km/h, full flaps and gear down. Target the beginning of the runway, when you are over the treshhold at about 15 ft / 5m, chop the throttle and rotate the plane to flare. Hold the nose up and the plane should settle at about 140-150 km/h in a three pointer attitude. If you are too fast you will bounce, if you are too slow you will crash ;D Edited January 7, 2014 by robtek
No601_Swallow Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 In my (limited) experience, you do have to be pretty close to the "numbers" in this game (as in ROF). With the Lagg I aim for within a knat's whisker of 200 kph over the threshold. It settles gracefully. After that, it's avoiding the ground loop that obsesses me...
Sternjaeger Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 hi Pip22, I published this some time agohttp://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/2260-so-how-do-i-land-small-tutorial-landing-your-aircraft/it has helped several people, see if it's any good for you!
Volkoff Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 (edited) Hey PIp, I don't have a tutorial, but in this video I demonstrate how I land, from the cockpit view and the external view: https://vimeo.com/83415415 MJ Edited January 7, 2014 by =69.GIAP=MIKHA 2
Fifi Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Salute Pip! For me the key is (beside lot of practicing of course) in the final "rounding" just before touching ground. In both planes ground is coming fast to you, and you often fall like a kind of brick (mainly in Lagg) even between 180/200Km/h with flaps out. If you don't force the plane to change its attitude by pulling stick at the last moment before touching, it will bounce very badly. This must be very controlled and smooth, so the plane will loose speed and altitude nicely at the last moment, like for a 3 points landing. Beware the stall at few meters high though, if pulling too hard or too high! Doing so, i'm able to land without having a rigid/stiff landing path. I don't have always an eye on speed, and don't always have the same approach angle... 1

ThudThunder Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 Thank you for the tips guys, I will apply them when the next patch opens. I appreciate the assistance, I already know how to land but I was just looking for specifics for both airplanes. Thanks! That is a soft landing! excelent! That was outstanding! S! 1
Volkoff Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys! I can't wait to learn how to land the Yak-1. She is supposedly nose heavy, so I need to stop jamming on the brakes, like I tend to when wheels down. MJ Edited January 8, 2014 by =69.GIAP=MIKHA
unreasonable Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Just in case it was not mentioned elsewhere, make sure you are not trying to land with a 100% fuel load - practice the take-off/landing missions with a 50% load. More realistic and much easier!
