Haza Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 Gents, Can anybody please tell me what has happened with the 109 canopy manufacturing process or fitment since the last up-date? I have found that just about any engagement in WOL, if I'm playing a 109 (any variant), as soon as any VVS ammo is near my aircraft, the canopy gets taken off!? I wish that I had a time machine as I would go back in time and buy shares in the 109 canopy factory. Joking aside, has anybody else noticed this? Regards
56RAF_Roblex Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 I think it is a defense mechanism. I have lost count of the number of times I have fatally damaged a 109 only for its canopy to fly back and kill my engine :-) 5

Hopefully in one piece, however, in saying that if that's all it needs to take out a VVS aircraft, I might fit a couple of those canopies to my wings as everything else seems to fail when I'm shooting at them.
Wolfram-Harms Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 That heavy canopy seems to be a good "secret weapon" - it also killed my engine on my first attempt with the P-39 AiraCobra. But seriously - some types of damage seem to appear too regularly and often on some aircraft. Why should the canopy of the 109 could come off so often??? I never heard that happened.
blitze Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 Be grateful, the canopy took you out, next up would be the German pilot flinging Sauerkraut at you in a desperate bid to get you off his tail. That's really dangerous.
CrazyDuck Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 (edited) "When threatened or trying to escape from a predator, a messerschmitt is capable of autotomy - it can shed its own canopy in order to appear mortally wounded, distract the predator and/or reduce the chances of being attacked further. They have been observed to have the ability to regrow the lost part in a safe environment of their nest." Edited April 4, 2018 by CrazyDuck 6 3
D3adCZE Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 Frankly, when it happens to me, it is in close quarter knife fight and I love it, the bonus visibility is great while scissoring

Blooddawn1942 Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 I've read a book of Hajo Hermann where he described how they once used to get rid of an annoying Spitfire near Rhodes. They threw rolls of toilet paper out of the Ju 88 thus irritating the poor chap. To be honest, I have my doubts that this has really happened this way... But a funny story anyway.
JG27*AD Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Haza, I had the same experience on WoL. It is quite surprising to have the canopy shot off and all that extra noise of the slipstream howling in my ears!! The visibility was much improved so that I was victorious in the fight !!! AD

Actually, when I played cliffs of dover it was very common but it was not caused by damage it was done deliberately by the pilots. Basically any time a 109 pilot found he no longer had an E and positional advantage he would blow his canopy so that if he took any damage he could immediately bail out to avoid getting a death on his stats. Perhaps 1C is just replicating this particularly 'Axis' obsession with stats and medals :-P (Note: I said 'particularly' not 'exclusively')
ethelward Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Oh, I first saw it in career mode and I thought it was some smart “dead spider” tactic from the AI... I'm disppointed
BlitzPig_EL Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 It's not just 109s either. Last night I had the top canopy of my A20 shot off by one of my BlitzPig mates in a 190 A5. The Havoc makes a good convertible actually. I paid him back though, as my tail gunner hurt his aeroplane, and I finished him off with the forward .50s after a bit of low altitude scissoring. It's what he deserved for jumping me on final approach...
