When an AI says something like "Engaging fighter, south, range 3 kilometers" is it three kilometers from me? from him? from the squadron leader?

and how do i get promoted? i've been promoted once (to lieutenant) but for no reason apparently.

The bearing and range are from the specific AI when an AI is making the call. The bearing and range are from your aircraft if you are making the call. IOW it's relative to the entity making the call. I have not progressed enough to get promoted. I don't know the answer to that.

I feel like AI's callouts leave a lot to be desired, and I hope they'll work on that.

''Eagle, fighter spotted, 3 o'clock engage, out'' - Whose 3 o'lock?

''Eagle 6, engaging fighter, range 1 km, out'' - 1 km from where and which direction?

''Engaging fighter, to the south, range 2km'' - Again, your south? My south? South of area of operation?

I think there's also a call out where they just simply say the enemy is really close, and follow it up with wind direction and speed, instead of more info regarding the enemy.

It kinda bugs me reading that. It would be very helpful to see something like;

'' Eagle, fighter spotted, 3km west of Stalingrad, high(altitude)''

Not to mention that you can't positively know that 'Eagle' is your callsign.

As to promotion, in the BoM campaign I was promoted to Lieutenent with 11 sorties (9 successful), 12 air kills/6 ground kills and 6 hours of flying time being on 'moderate' difficulty. Dunno which mattered.

Actually you can tell who is you. If you look closely at the small writing above the `Eagle` or (`Stork` callsign as we tend to be referred to), it will have the name you chose for your pilot.

Thanks, never noticed it

If you remember your call sign and your number, you will find some callouts come from your pilot.  That info is relative to your position and distance.  It helps to find targets.

Ground Spotter callouts will also give positions on the map so you can see the area to fly to and try to plan where to intercept enemy flights.

One Thing that bugs me is, that in the German voice over at least it also mentions if the contacts are above or below but it is hard to make out and not written out in the text message, which I think it should.

I find it slightly annoying how your pilot says some things that you`re not aware you`re doing like "I`m attacking this contact!"

And I`m like, "Really? I didn`t even know it was there! Ok then!"

Or when he requests me to land, i`d prefer to make that request myself.

i agree with the points you've made, but here is a little tip: if it says its close, it means that the contact is less than 1 km from him, and if it says its long distance, it's over 11km from him
