T_oll Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 First of all, IL-2 is fantastic in VR! I’m having a blast! Naturally, generating two separate graphic streams requires good hardware. Compromises has to be made. But even on low graphic settings, IL-2 looks great! Ok, not as great as on a 4K screen, but those of you who are hooked by VR know what I’m talking about when I say I gladly trade some graphics for the incredible immersion. I have an i7 4790k running at 4.5GHz, 32Gb DDR3 1866 RAM, 1080TI and everything installed on SSDs. I use Oculus Rift CV1 for VR. Everything runs well on rather high settings, but not at 90FPS for perfect VR smoothness. ASW on the Rift works really well except for where it is interacting with the propeller disc. I understand the limitations of ASW and that rapid changes of the image makes the ASW inter/extrapolation a hit and miss, which causes artifacts. But this is for the most part because of the propeller disc. and a few other rapidly moving objects. My question is this: Can anything be done about the propeller disc? Could the devs make this optional? Simply turn it off. Or is it possible to make it less like a moving object, that won’t disturb the ASW as much? Perhaps just a «glass» disc, or something? I know I can turn ASW off, and it is currently the better option, IMHO, even if that will cause some missed frames and associated artifacts. But ASW works so well, except for the propeller induced distortions, that I feel IL-2 just needs a tweak here to make it the perfect VR experience.
Archie Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I agree it would be great if the devs could sort the prop out, but in the meantime have you tried this?
Wolf8312 Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Could you not use 'async reprojection' combined with 'always on reprojection' in steam VR?

Wouldn't that be like always having ASW on? 35 minutes ago, 6./ZG76_Archie said: in the meantime have you tried this? No, I haven’t tried it. Is it possible to use this mod and just turn the propeller off? Do you use this mod, and does it work well? Edited March 25, 2018 by T_oll
Wolf8312 Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 (edited) Yes similar but I dont get any artifacts that I notice. I think both methods have pros and cons and this is one of the pros of the vive no prop artifacts, but many rift users say ASW is better. Use both AS reprojection and always on reprojection though. Turning the prop off is a bit of an immersion breaker when flying prop planes in VR especially flying something like the spitfire in which the propeller creates a rather glorious visual effect! Plus that mod was a little unstable for me (crashes and fps drops) and only introduces yet another variable. Edited March 25, 2018 by Wolf8312

I agree! The prop effect is really well done in IL-2. It’s a shame to remove it. But the artifacts also kills some immersion. This is why I’m hoping the clever devs. will come up with a smart solution.

Probably best to use Oculus technology with a Rift. I don't make any settings in Steam VR, I use a profile for my games using the Oculus Tray Tool. Works great for me. No prop artifacts ( ASW off ).
coconut Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 @T_oll I think you can enable ATW with always on reprojection (no ASW): Ctrl + KP2 IIRC. Stable frame rate, no prop artifacts. There are downside, but I won't mention them in case you don't notice them.
T_oll Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 Yes, that works. And yes, there are some blurring. But at least the gunsight is useable. I think I prefer just turning ASW off with the Ctrl + KP1 as my computer normally maintains close to 90 FPS, but not quite.
