Haza Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 (edited) Gents, With the expectation of Carrier Ops just over the horizon, I think that Jason perhaps forgot to mention their secret plan of an additional Carrier based aircraft!!! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3970966/Remarkable-medals-logbooks-world-s-greatest-test-pilot-Eric-Winkle-Brown-saved-nation-displayed-British-museum-failing-sell-auction.html Joking aside, Eric "Winkle" Brown! What a true gentleman and an amazing aviator. That said, I can just about land the P-39 on a full length runway!! Regards Edited March 24, 2018 by Haza 1
Jason_Williams Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 The Brits testing the P-39 for a possible Carrier Ops? That's crazy. Jason
EAF_Apollo Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Imagine getting medals for multiple crashes. I would get sacked for only one of those mishaps.

Chief_Mouser Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 If anyone out doesn't know the story of Eric 'Winkle' Brown then he's well worth looking up. Youtube is full of clips about him but this 1-hour BBC documentary will tell you all you need to know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEe5ul37Q7g From flying with Ernst Udet to landing jets on carriers, this man holds many aviation records that are unlikely to ever be broken. I saw him at a book signing once; didn't speak to him but he appeared be a very nice bloke.

Jason The US Navy looked at a taildragger version of the P-39 before rejecting it. Bell XFL Airabonita: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_XFL_Airabonita Wheels

You guys had to out-do us though by flying a whole squadron of B25s off one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolittle_Raid
Lensman Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I've read and seen a lot about Captain Eric Melrose "Winkle" Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, Hon FRAeS, RN but until now I didn't know that he flew rotary wing aircraft. A great man and a superb pilot. The British General Chuck Yeager (and then some)
Voidhunger Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 He was only one after war who had balls to fly Me163. 2
