I was in the middle of what was going to be a very successful career mission today and Win 10 started an automatic security download, my controls

locked up, plane crashed and I lost my Soviet pilot.   Bummer, he was doing a good job too.

Classic Windows 10.

I really hope we get a good, simple, gaming orientated open source OS in my lifetime.

With Windows 10 Pro version you have more control over updates (but not as good as in Windows 7).

For Windows 10 Home edition setting to metered wi-fi connection prevents forced updates.

I have not allowed WINDOWS to make automatic updates.
The problems many people had after the upgrade to KUBAN might also partly be caused by a new WINDOWS version.
A friend of mine found out - after some searching - that his BIOS had been set from "Normal" to "Energy Saving".

I have still not made those updates, and my sim runs smooth like butter.

Get Spybot Anti-Beacon and make sure all the Win 10 spyware is off and stays off.

Itunes did that to me too.  Fortunately I rescued my DiD pilot by Ctrl-Alt-Deleting and killing Il-2 as a process instead of ending the mission.

Wow, that is crazy - my Windows 10 has never updated during a gaming session on me. Maybe I have just been really lucky.

Me either. Popular as it might be to rag on Windows, I've really been please with Win10. It's been the most problem free operating system I've run to date.

Go into Settings > Update > Change active hours

Set it to the times where you're gaming or just set it for the whole day. That'll prevent auto updates. Regardless of the efficacy of Windows forcing updates... This is something that any gamer should do to make sure they don't have an issue.

Even with default settings though I've never seen this happen.

I've never had it restart while I'm using the machine, even with a notification asking to restart for hours. Check your update settings and set it to notify you of need to restart instead of just restarting.

Overall, I happen to like Windows 10. It would be nice to disable auto updates entirely or set them on a particular schedule (e.g. Monday 3am only) but overall it's pretty decent. Much as I like Linux, it will never be a viable home PC option imho. It has the old chicken or egg problem, it won't be adopted unless there is plenty of compatible software, but no developers will write software without an existing user base. I saw a glimmer of hope for it with the steam machine idea, but that seems to have fizzled out.

If you set your internet connection to a "metered connection" then tell windows to never update on a metered connection it will set your updates to manual only.  Onedrive opening(which it odes in the background) can also cause weird in game and crashing problems or sometimes prolonged lag.  To avoid this I have to open onedrive,  set it to stop syncing for 24hrs and then quite, otherwise it'll re-open a few hours later.
