DairyAir Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I found this Youtube WWII footage. Including lots of Real Life BOS scenes. Starring the IL-2 Sturmovik.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNw1FtJq8Yg

pilotpierre Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 thank you very well armored aircraft was very hard to shoot it down. there needs to be a movie done about the night Witches I am fairly certain the Russians made one some time ago. There was definitely a documentary floating around at one stage.
DairyAir Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 thank you very well armored aircraft was very hard to shoot it down. there needs to be a movie done about the night Witches The U2 and the Night witches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSEro1gVbOY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-5cVgjJZu4 Very brave Pilots!
Reflected Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I don't mean to diminish the merits of the Night Witches, but according to the memoires of a Hungarian pilot, the biggest damage they caused was not done by the bombs they dropped. Their loud, flying sewing-machines could be accounted for many of a sleepless hour, like the sound of a mosquito somewhere in the room. In any casy they must have been very brave to fly those prehistoric contraptions in WW2.
Meteor2 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 But... i found a source, where a canadian in german uniform (25. Panzer Regiment, 1944) wrote in his memoirs, that this bomber was often downed with MG 42 and with MG 34 from the ground, too. The tail of the airplane, was absolutely not immune against small caliber weapons. Source: Bruno Friesen, Panzer Gunner, page 89 / 90)
LLv34_Flanker Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 (edited) S! IL-2 pilot Vasili B. Emelianenko wrote in his memoirs that the IL-2's were far from invulnerable to AAA or fighters' fire. Those 20mm and bigger AA guns downed them with relative ease, as there were other areas to get damage on than the "armored tub". The cooler could not withstand fire brom below thus engine cooked off etc. He mentions the IL-2 ran VERY hot even in cruise settings etc. But cockpit was indeed relatively well protected from small calibre fire if coming from behind, the armor plate was thick there. Fifi Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 S! IL-2 pilot Vasili B. Emelianenko wrote in his memoirs that the IL-2's were far from invulnerable to AAA or fighters' fire. Yes...but i somewhere hope 777 will give IL2s some strenght thought...so they can take few punishment without going down each time. At least more strenght than Lagg. Unless of course engine or gas tank are directly hitted.
LLv34_Flanker Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 S! Shred the wings and it won't fly. Hit the tail and it loses controls. It does not always have to be the engine For example Ilmari Juutilainen downed IL-2's with the Brewster and it had only 4 x .50cal guns. Hit method was to sideslip and shoot through the side killing the pilot. Seems .50cal had enough penetrating power from the side to cockpit area.
Tr.Gr.186_Schutze Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 I would like to point out that the game version has one of the earlier versions. you can see it as no gunner is present after the pilot seat. the early sturmoviks suffered badly (aft wooden fuselage). So i dont think the flying tank legend will happen in the game.

DairyAir Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 My hope is that the various aircraft in the Sim, are correct for the particular time-frame represented. If the actual IL-2 aircraft involved in the battle had a rear gunner, then I would expect the same in the Sim.
FlatSpinMan Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 They'll be represented accurately. Premium founders at least will have a rear gunner option from the start. That same option will be unlockable for all players, but not available right from the start.
