It looks I can put my hands on one Oculus Rift so I am wondering if my MSI Trident3 (16G RAM, i5-7400, GTX1060/3GB) would be able to support it. Does anyone has experience running similar config?

Yes it will support it.

Hopefully someone running a 1060 can express their experience with it.

You might also check this thread:

It has some benchmarking data, maybe you can see how some 1060 cards performed in VR with a test track in BoS.

i have a gtx970 - no problem running with lowered settings, still very enjoyable and mindblowing. your 1060 3GB should be a tad faster.

But forget fancy stuff like AA, SS etc.

I am more concernded about your cpu, thats the part i had most improvement fps and stutter wise (going from i3 3,5ghz - i5 @4,4ghz). Unfortunatly BOS is very very CPU hungry.

Even running at 4,4ghz f.e. carrier missions with lots of units can have a big impact at times.

BoX uses 3.1 to 3.5GB of VRAM in a typical career mission (not Kuban). So no, a 3GB 1060 will likely not work well. The GTX 1060 6GB can muster a consistent 45 fps though on medium-high settings.

I have the Trident 3 as well and it is usable.

Thank you for all the responses guys. I'll probably give it a shot as I can probably get one Oculus fairly cheap. I just hope I don't end up buying CPU/GPU as well :)

I had a shiny new Ryzen 5 1600x and RX 480 8GB (faster than your GTX 1060 3GB) and bought a Rift. I then decided I needed a beefier GPU. Thus I swapped the RX 480 8GB for a 1080 TI (got more than I payed for the RX 480 too, thanks crypto miners!). Then I discovered the dated engines BoX and DCS use wouldn't properly leverage my 6 core CPU, I needed more clock speed. Thus I swapped it for an i7-8700k and overclocked the snot out of it. That $400 Rift cost me about $1,500 in the end after accounting for selling previous parts. Definitely loving it though.

Opinions on this, as you noticed, will vary. Box will run and if it's your first time in VR you will be in for a treat once you put that hmd on, even on lower graphic settings.

In the end it will come down to what your expecting. If it's competitive multiplayer you will have issues with not so fluid gameplay/asw in critical moments. If it's singleplayer you can adapt/choose mission complexity to suit your rig and at least for me the occasional stutter/framedrop when flying offline is not a very big issue.

I have a GTX 1060 3gb and an i7 4790k, I'm able to hit 70-90fps pretty reliably with Medium settings and HUD off. Used to have SS, but dialed that back after the kuban patch.
