JG4_Sputnik Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Since clouds are ruing the game for me in VR - I can fly only with lowest clouds settings which gives me a blurry mess (especially distant clouds and when an enemy is between you and a cloud it is flickering and shimmering very badly), and with good clouds on I have not enough fps... What I did until now is that I just flew on days with clear weather but this is somewhat unsatisfying and not fair to my virtual teammates... I wonder if this could be done maybe for a future update? Cheers 2
Wolfram-Harms Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 According to Jason, if I got him right, there should be one. Maybe when you set it to lowest? Did you activate 4k TEXTURES? That seems to be important to eliminate stutter. Maybe it can also solve your problems? What gear do you use? Graphic card, processor, monitor resolution?
Danziger Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 I think Jason's fix is more to take care of stutters because it just made my clouds worse. I forget which update it was many years ago now but we had this cloud problem before and it was fixed. There was always a bit of jagged edges on things in front of clouds but I remember sometime after the MiG-3 was released they fixed it so it was barely noticeable. Something has happened now that's made it come back worse than ever. Now even smoke trails and the smoke from Stalingrad creates some really bad jaggies with the clouds.

Yes agreed, they do seem to be a little worse since the update.
216th_Jordan Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 coulds quality is managed by graphics preset IIRC. Balanced setting is horrible for clouds. High setting seems to be the best compromise.
Danziger Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Clouds have their own slider now with low, medium and high settings.

Uufflakke Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Untill a couple of days ago I used to fly with Cloud Settings to High but since the update and its massive loss of fps I had to switch to Medium for acceptable gameplay. Now I can "enjoy" the jagged and shimmering clouds in the far distance. Just to let you what happens with Medium Cloud Settings. Rather frustrating realizing that it was much better at the beginning of the week.

Now I see what this talk of cloud "shimmering" was all about. Back to High on both. Edited March 17, 2018 by dburne
Danziger Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 I'm sure they just need some time to do some more twerking to get everything perfect again. They had a lot to pack in there to get this delivered by the deadline. Plus I think they had what like a week of testing?

JG4_Sputnik Posted March 17, 2018 Author Posted March 17, 2018 Well I did a few tests with the clouds, I don't think they are "broken" but for good fps on low they are per se blurry. So my suggestion would be to have an option to completely turn them off for SP, but I don't know if this is easily achievable (MP exploits for example). I have a gtx970 and a i7 4770k which puts me on a tight spot for VR and clouds enabled unfortunately. I want to switch to a 1080ti but with the bitcoin hype shortage of GPU it is just not yet achievable for me. So an easy fix for me would be clouds completely off.
Danziger Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Yes I just fund the fix. Clouds set to high, graphics preset on high or ultra. Just have to deal with the lower FPS. Or just play SP and only fly in clear skies.
216th_Jordan Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Reducing draw distance helps greatly with cloud performance for me. I run it at 100km now which is the perfect setting for me.

Haha yep its also why everyone was thinking that a fresh install was fixing the clouds when in actual fact the game was just resetting back to high graphics again! 3 hours ago, JG4_Sputnik said: Well I did a few tests with the clouds, I don't think they are "broken" but for good fps on low they are per se blurry. Yeah but I think if we make the devs aware of the problem there should be a fix. After all balanced and low graphics settings used to be fine for clouds so it could well just be a bug.

JG4_Sputnik Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 I can confirm that setting the general graphics preset on second lowest and clouds on medium is a very good balance. The clouds look ok and there's almost no fps loss. Works pretty well for me.
