First of all, I like to fly different planes a lot. So that means I need to create about two dozen careers, one for each plane. I can't remember which dude flies which plane because there's no indication what they are flying, only their squadron. Do I really need to make a text file to keep track of the planes these guys are flying?

If you really feel the need to start two dozen careers at once, I guess you have no time left to make a few notes on a piece of paper?

On the other hand, you are free to give your pilot any name you want, so why not name each of them after the plane they’re flying?

in reality, a squadron can fly several types at any given time, so what you are requesting probably isn’t practical.

I thought this was year 2018 and such things were not much of a concern, thanks for the tip for naming the guys.

He has a point and it would be simple to just show the plane when you hover over the squadron icon, instead it just shows the same icon on the side of a generic plane...

Or you could just transfer to a new squadron.
