mudpuppy Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Bill Overstreet was the pilot of the P-51 "Berlin Express" that flew under the Eiffel Tower chasing an Me-109 in early 1944. I've provided a link to the local news article reporting his death below: http://www.roanoke.com/news/article_378d4b12-7290-11e3-b390-0019bb30f31a.html This is an article from last summer when he was interviewed at an airshow: http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbird-articles/wwii-veteran-aviator-bill-overstreet-p-51-mustang-berlin-express.html I never had the pleasure of meeting the man, but am proud that a young man from a small rural town in Virginia could take on all that he did during the war, survive and return back home for a long and (apparently) happy life. Salute!
Bando Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Read all the links. Great guy he was. RIP William Overstreet Jr.
Feathered_IV Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 WIP I wonder who the Luftwaffe pilot was. I feel a great deal of pity for him.
Sternjaeger Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) great pilot, I wish he was remembered for more than just the Eiffel Tower story though (which is nothing incredible per se and according to some vets I met was a bit "embellished"). Edited January 6, 2014 by Sternjaeger
0ddball Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 RIP, Many thanks and eternal gratitude to him! Always sad to hear another WWII veteran has passed away.
