The little thing that absolutely makes the career mode

I just want to say a big "thank you" to the devs for including the "Iron Man" dead-is-dead mode option for the career.

It really means a world of difference for me, not only in terms of immersiveness and excitement - it directly influences the manner in which I fly. I fly much more conservatively and actually head home, when my engine receives damage, and I would never throw myself into a fight with 3-4 enemy fighters, the way I often did in the campaign. I have also come to dread the occasional ground attack mission, trying to hit the target closing at breakneck speed while avoiding those trees with tracers from AAA flying all around me makes the hair stand on the back of my neck.

Having a virtual life to care for and protect is incredibly important for my ability to enjoy the SP experience.

And yeah, I know I could always choose not to use the refly button, but just knowing that the option exists removes some of the excitement and dread, and do I really have the discipline to not hit "refly", when the pilot I've nursed through 50 mission gets blown to smithereens by a random flak burst?

Thank you for making this awesome sim even... ...awesomer?

I do this too. It makes me make smarter decisions when I fly, and I'm much less reckless since every action has consequences. It certainly helps to increase my heart rate any time I'm in the thick of it.

I feel the same, I plan to put "many" hours into the career over the coming years.

I had a quick blast in MP last night, and was gobsmacked how well that was performing in VR too.

Never mind thanks, I want to give these dev's a man hug ! ;)

Exactly same feeling.

Remember if you want the Dead is Dead option you have to untick the Iron Man box! I read this in a thread yesterday but cant find now

Edit: here is the tread

Now I´m confused a bit.  Quote from the linked thread above: " I have iron man checked..... and i was not dead after being shot down and crashed..... maybe it's the other way around? "

Hope I'm not breaching NDA here, but it came up during pre release testing. It turns out that there is an old bug that can under certain circumstances not register the fatality. This should be fixed at some point in the not too distant future.

That sounds like a glitch in the way the game registers pilot death. Happens from time to time, especially if you bail out too low and die - sometimes it won't register.

Having "Iron Man" unticked doesn't mean you can't die in the career, it just means that you will get the option to refly a mission, if you don't like the outcome (which often means: You're dead) With "Iron Man" ticked, you have to accept the result of the mission.

I think "awesomer" is appropriate in this case, Finkeren!

Couldn't have said it any better - I feel absolutely the same! Now the immersion with my Carreers should be perfect.

Looks like a good moment to restart my Mig-3 career....

Although i haven't played it for more than 10 minutes yet, i must say i was delighted by the fact that the homebase is populated and looks like an actual airfield in use. I always found this a immersion killer with ROF.

PS: Let me add, that I like it when I can choose, if I am Staffel leader, or be promoted one day to be one - or even select "Never".

Personally, I feel much more free if I must not lead a bunch of Krauts. Though I might be more successful in any ops, if I would.

That may have been there before Kuban though.

I started a dead is dead career in the 110 last night. First mission: kill some Peshkas. I shot up several, but took some hits from gunners, starboard wing streaming fuel. I followed the rest of the staffel in the tailchase for several minutes, then thought better of it, and headed home. It took me a bit of hunting to find the airfield, but I did; what welcome sight!

Did a victory roll to burn off speed, gear and flaps down, entered the pattern, turned base to final...engines quit, dropping like a streamlined anvil for a village. Nose down, ease some flaps back in, round out at the last second. Down and safe, on the outskirts of my field. Walk to the OC for a liter of pilsner, where the boys told me I had d3 confirmed kills.

Next day I'm signed up for another mission. Beats the alternative...

Thnx! I'm a bit worried about the performance but we will see. It's good the devs are putting in more graphical fidelity. It would be even better if we could buy better GPU's.. But that's a whole different discussion.

Just starting out in Moscow, i-16, escorting il-2s, intercepted by bf-110s, tailed one and got it smokin’, decided that was enough to get him out of the fight, took a few hits, engine damaged, made it back to friendly territory, had to ditch, heart ponds, find friendly artillery, gear collapsed, survived.....

Few days in hospital, back to base, found 1/4 of my flight was MIA or KIA, new recruits, new aircraft...

Emotions, took a shot to the fallen, went on ground mission...

bottom line, I like this new career mode.. brings back days of RoF

thanks devs!
