racketyjack Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 ...the campaign is a LOT like Rise of Flight. Imagine that, lol. Glad I own that sim too. All in all, the improvements are VERY nice. Love the clouds and moisture effect on the windscreen. I thought for a moment it was me tearing up at the beauty of it all. The terrain is awesome. Absolutely fantastic. The planes are so detailed that you guys should build planes for Prepar3d or something. (I fly that too) My only grumbles are that I hated losing my old campaign stats, the old campaign seemed easier to get going and didn't take so long to get started each mission, and so far, my first Moscow mission in an I-16 was a pretty long one flying quite some distance there and back. I'm glad you up'd the ante on the time compression to 8. I was going to post some screenshots but they just don't seem to be the same quality as what I see ingame and they don't do it justice. Gotta say, all in all, well done Jason and team, you've done it again. I love it.
busdriver Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 You know that only 2X time acceleration works at the moment. 2 1
racketyjack Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 Uh, I got 8X, used it several times. 1

I just tested a campaign mission that is fairly light on logic, and 4X is actually a bit faster than 2X (when in a heavier mission there's no change at all) however it's still nowhere near actual 4X speed. In a VERY light mission, just 2 aircraft, 8X actually works, but that's a highly artificial circumstance.
racketyjack Posted March 17, 2018 Author Posted March 17, 2018 (edited) First Ive heard that 8X isn't really 8X. Yes, I do see a graphic that says 8X. Seems so far in my two missions Ive flown there is a definite difference between each speed. Couldn't tell you if its actually 8X, just that there is obviously a difference. Of course, there isn't tons of aircraft. From what Ive seen so far about maybe 20 or 2 dozen scattered around the map at the most, 5 or 6 in my flight, plus quite a few land and water vehicles. I don't see though how the number of aircraft should affect time compression. But then again, I am not a software developer. And honestly, I don't really care other than it is nice to hustle thru the long flights there and back. Hopefully, if this is an issue, it will get worked out. In the meantime, I'm still going to enjoy flying this gem. Just got done whacking 3 more vehicles for a total of 5 in two missions. This time we were intercepted by a covey of 110's. Woulda been nice to bag one but I was out of ammo so hightailed it home. Question, in career missions, if I am separated from my flight and land back at base before the return midpoint disappears and the base waypoint appears, will I still get credit for the mission? Or do I have to come back with everyone else? I was wondering that as I was heading home. Fortunately I suppose, what was left of my flight made it to the midpoint before I got back to base. 216th_Jordan Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 It doesn't matter if you arrive early, just making it back is a success on its own. 1

Yeah I kinda wish they had kept the old campagin around (replacing it with the mission generator perhaps) simply because it was fun and simple to dive into when you wanted a casual battle. And yeah I was in the middle of a campaign too kinda bummed to lose my old stats. Ah well I'll live with it cause the new update is like a whole new game! 1
racketyjack Posted March 17, 2018 Author Posted March 17, 2018 I was hoping someone would comment on some of my observations, thank you. I liked the old campaign also. It was easier to get into, though I think the advantage of the new Rise of Flight style campaign is that it carries a lot more detail and does seem to make it more realistic I suppose. I just hope the devs don't lose the IL2 flavor of the sim, THAT is what has been so popular over the years. But I got to say, what I have seen so far has been just plain outstanding; I LIKE IT! I hope everyone understands this isn't meant to be a lot of critism. I am just offering my observations as conversation and hopefully discussion. 1

No I get you man I was probably one of the few people who never hated the campaign largely I think because I am a bit of a noob and actually found it challenging, but also because of it's accessibility. It was great for just getting into a fight quickly, but not so shallow as to feel utterly pointless and meaningless like the mission generator. These new missions require a bit more time and focus, I feel like I really need a bit of time to do them justice. I got back from one last night and realized it was 4 in the morning! That said if I had the choice between the two I'd certainly pick the new campaign because some of the missions are so much more realistic. I always found the Il-2 series to be souless in the menus and lacking in the presentation department so I think its good they are going for a bit of a new style. I always found IL2 to be a great game in flight, but it never felt like a polished gaming experience. I think the BOS devs have done a great job of addressing this problem and breathing some color and life into the presentation of the game itself. Love the ironman feature, its exactly what a game like this needs although I survive now about as long as a real russian fighter pilot probably would have done back in 1941! It's now the undisputed king of WW2 flight sims IMO! 1
racketyjack Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 (edited) I think you hit the nail on the head here, good observations. Its also nice that the campaign can be played on different settings. I'm personally not ready for ironman. Like you said, Id be lucky to survive a week. Hell, I keep forgetting to lock my stupid tailwheel on my Mig-3; you should see me going down the runway. Its ended in a groundloop a couple times now, lol. But I have finished my 5th mission in the Moscow campaign with the setting on normal, taken down two Me-110's and a Me-109 and earned a few thousand extra rubles to buy drinks for all my comrades. We've moved the squadron to a field near Moscow and await orders. My first kill. Not sure the gunner made it out...that's his arm waving over the fire! Edited March 18, 2018 by racketyjack
