Help me love the M.C.202

With 3.001 it has become apparent - I adore just about everything completely and rapturiously - except the M.C.202...

I liked it in Il-2:1946... I like the light armament (I'm a big fan of the Mig-3 - so two weak 12.7mm guns is fine by me)... I like how it looks. I just don't like flying it.

I find it departs into a stall with too little warning (That might be it - a turning fighter with nasty surprises - I don't know).

So, how do I love it? I'm seriously asking for some marriage counselling hear from Macchi fans.

Perhaps persevere?

Not a great bit of advice, I know but I felt the same about both the 202 *and* the P40, until one day I said "sod it, i'm gonna stick with this P40, it can't be all bad!"

Half a dozen sessions later I can hold my own against 109F4's (if there's not too many) and it's a beast for killing ground living organisms.

A couple of weeks ago I couldn't get it off the ground 5 out of 10 times.

I've also learnt to "bravely run away" when the odds are not in my favour.

I too, want to love the 202 but as you pointed out it seems to want to plummet to earth every turn but perhaps that's it's weekness and you need to find it's strength?

Sorry I can't assist much but I know how you feel!

I have flown it some. To me it climbs slowly, accelerates slowly in level flight or a dive, looses much speed fast in sharper turns, and stalls easily and with little warning like you said. However, it does seem to roll nice, and can reach quite a fast speed in level flight. So far I have flown it as a kind of "level flight Boom and Zoom". Hopefully some more experienced pilots with it will weigh in though.

Kameraden,

When flown properly the M.C. 202 is fast, really fast. Work it like a 190, guns not so great but you can really control a fight with airspeed.

I'm in a similar situation, though i wouldn't say i don't love it. In fact i love it, it's just i can't get it to love me .  Pretty bad condition to be in if you ask me..

I decided i will put it on hold for some time. But I could also use some pro tips cause i will eventually get back to it.

I bought it last year when it was on sale. Partially to fill out my stable and also to support the team. I was never much on Italian fighters in IL2-46, barely touched them. But every plane in BOX is just so well done I developed an affinity for the 202. I like the limited ammo in the sense that it makes me go for "head shots" and that makes me try to fly the plane better. And I like the gunsight. Hated it at first and now I really like it, perhaps simply because it's different. When the planes are this well made, diversity is a beautiful thing.

I can't cite any real technical qualities of the plane that make it special, I like it because it's one more excellent BOX plane and I like having lots of excellent BOX planes simply because it's fun.  :)

Drop your fuel load it can turn with a yak just , !!! don't over do it one or two passes then extend .

I'm finding  it a good dog fighter so far .

The macchi is a great dog fighter. You can out turn a yak for sure. It can do flat and rolling scissors like an ufo. When manuevering dont carry too much speed similar to 109. My problem is its weak armament against stout Russian aircraft and poor rear visibility.

You have a boost button. Thats the way you get it to perform almost like a 109 in the vertical.

Keep speed between 400-500km/h - then the 202 will stay coordinated just by herself.

I love macchi my tip is: use boost when you need it for short time for extra power.

Its not Bf-109 but its very close and that makes it very good fighter.

It can take down Pe-2 easily when your aim is good :)

Just dont overextend when taking down bombers since your engine gets broken easily as Bf-109 (It has DB 601 after all)

This is fine, exactly how a Macchi should have to be. This was the most relevant problem for a pilot, and 205 was more dangerous than 202 in this aspect. However, if the pilot did have enough altitude, stall was really easy to recover. Macchi 202 / 205 are always to be intended as Boom&Zoomer with very good aerobatic capabilities but the not warned stall was there. We know about a 205 ANR pilot who died dogfighting at very low altitude with an american P-47, because of this problem.

Reading this topic, i can really tell i was/am doing something wrong . I probably wouldn't even believe you  but there are actual videos where people are doing serious things with the plane.

Keep your speed up and don't be violent with the controls, and she will reward you.

The Macchi is a fine thoroughbred race horse, not a cattle culling quarter horse, or if you prefer an automotive comparison, she is a Ferrari compared to a Mini Cooper S.  In a parking lot the Mini will win, out on the open road, the Ferrari will leave the mini in it's wake.

Turn boost on. Leave it on. Unless you're at cruising speed/altitude. You have unlimited boost in Macchi (it drains fuel fast) but as long as you keep within the limits of combat and emergency power you'll be surprised how fast this thing is.

That's good to know. I had discovered the boost but only used it sparingly. If you could simulate inertia on your body I think it would set you back in your seat when you kick it on, almost find myself bracing before activating it.

I fell in love with the MC 202 the moment I finally found the fuel gauge. I couldn't find it for the longest time inspite of people telling me where to look for it.

The best thing I love about it though, is that unlike the E7 I can usually pull out of a dive :)

lol...yes Italian fuel gauge are very strange ...i took me a while to find it too

For me it was easy to find. But Yak fuel gauges i hate. I always have to extend my neck and raise a bit from the seat to see them because they are so close to the fuselage. I bet i look like an retarded ostrich everytime i try to peek the gauges

lol...same here ...i open the canopy it's easier to see it (but a bit dangerous when the enemy is close)

With some flaps, like 35-45% or so, it can be pretty stable at low speed turns. Question is,is it good to be slow at all.
