DieGeist Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 (edited) Hello all, I have posted this in the VR section as well, but it might be a bug so I figured I could put it here too. I purchased BOS yesterday with the intention of playing it exclusively from my HTC Vive. However I am running into a problem. I noticed it when I first fired the game up in VR ( I ran it in 2D first to set the key-binds and other settings), for some reason the game (even in the main menu) is only rendering about 3/4 of the image per eye. It almost looks as if the IPD is set wrong, with each eye showing a very noticeable vertical black bar close the nose in each eye. It feels like the image is off center or is to narrow (although what I can see seems to be the right scale). At first I thought that my HMD was broken so I fired up both DCS and Elite just to verify that it was working like I remembered it, and sure enough both were rendering each eye correctly. Also each eye is different, with the right eye being much worse then the left eye. I have attempted to move the IPD around to fix it, but this is definitely an issue where only most of the screen in each eye is being used, not the whole thing. Has anyone ran into this before, I could not find anything in my limited wanderings through the forums. Thank you P.S. Please overlook my terrible MSpaint skills. C6_lefuneste Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 Hello, I had the same problem (but with a less wider area) with my Pimax4K, but is seems linked to Piplay version...
DieGeist Posted March 15, 2018 Author Posted March 15, 2018 I wonder if this is a possible bug across all the VR HMDs? I am using the latest SteamVR and Nvidia Drivers.
DieGeist Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 Things I have attempted to resolve this on my own are: Re-install the game (via Steam) Re-install SteamVR Swap USB/HMDI ports for HMD Clear user settings and start from scratch Install HMD on different computer and run the game (fresh install) The Primax fix wont really work here since it is using different software. Thank you
dburne Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 No problem on my end with the Rft. Are you by chance running the Steam VR Beta? If so try running the regular release version of Steam VR.
DieGeist Posted March 17, 2018 Author Posted March 17, 2018 Hi dburne, No I am running the latest gold release of SteamVR, but I have attempted to run the beta to see if that made things better or worse. I did not see any change. I did more digging last night and this morning and have contacted 2 other Vive users that have I have flown DCS with. I had both update BoS and run the app. Both of them have the Vive setup so that the screens are further out (using the knobs on the side) because they fly with glasses on. As soon as they took their glasses off and pulled the Vive back in to its lowest setting they also saw the black bars cutting off their inner peripheral vision, with the right eye being worse than the left. It can be easily tested by wearing the headset and looking at your nose with your left eye closed then starting the game. You will see the part of the screen by your nose go from the white SteamVR room to black as the login screen pops up and it never comes back. I attempted to film it with my phone, but the video comes out terrible and you cant really see anything but glare. I am sure of it now that this is not an isolated issue with my hardware and that BoS is definitely not rendering to the whole screen inside the HMD, what is causing it though I don't know. As soon as 3DMigoto mod is updated I will install that and see if I can correct it by messing with the games IPD setting. Hopefully support can help us before then. I would be curious to see if other Vive users are experiencing the same issue. All the ones I have spoken to are now seeing the problem so I think I will post to the reddit Vive forum and see if anyone else is running into it. Thank you
dburne Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 (edited) That is really strange, as the Vive runs at the same resolution of the Rift. Not seen any other reports of this. Edit - never mind this is the bug report section my bad... Edited March 17, 2018 by dburne
DieGeist Posted March 17, 2018 Author Posted March 17, 2018 (edited) Is it possible that the slightly larger FOV on the Vive is allowing this to happen? I don't have any friends with the Rift otherwise I would ask them to test. Although it probably a moot point since I believe most of the users here are probably using the Rift. The image I made in MSpaint is exaggerated to try and show whats happening. Its not that bad in real life. Maybe half of what is represented. Thank you Edited March 17, 2018 by DieGeist words are hard
DieGeist Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 I posted this in the Vive forums on Reddit to get a wider sample size. It looks like this is definitely affecting more than just me and might be a problem across the Vive HMD platform. Here is a link to the post:
DieGeist Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 It looks like this is not only a wide spread issue with the Vive, its all so a known issue: I guess it was never fixed. Is posting here enough or is there a way to get official support for this by submitting a help request maybe? Thanks
scrapmetal Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 Your MSpaint skills skills are good enough for me to understand the problem much better. I've never seen this problem as I've always been searching at the left edge of the left eye and right edge in the right eye. The opposite sides are the problem. I can see the issue now. For me personally, it's more like it's affecting 1/16 of the screen, and only if looking straight ahead, because of the geometry of the eyes. It's very easy to overlook it, because you expect your view to be blocked by the nose, anyway. Now that I know it's there, I hope it doesn't ruin the experience for me. The shallower the depth of your eyes in relation to your forehead, the worse the problem, I suspect.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 I have a Vive, normally have the screen a few notches back. I just tried with the screen as close to my face as possible to test this out for you. Maybe if I was using thinner foam I might be able to see what you are reporting, but I have to press the screen really hard to my face to notice it. Normal foam I don't notice the issue. What are you using?
DieGeist Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 I am using the thinner of the two foams so I am sure that this might be exacerbating the situation. Obviously There are ways to make flying with this bug bearable, its just that I don't have to do this with any other application so I feel I shouldn't have to with BoX. Especially if this has been a known bug for over a year. Thank you
scrapmetal Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 I'm using 11mm foam. I can't focus on the black borders directly until I push the headset against my eyes to compress the foam. Otherwise, I'm only aware of it if I use peripheral vision and start thinking about it. In game, it doesn't have too much impact. It would be good to have this fixed for those who do find this distracting.
DieGeist Posted March 19, 2018 Author Posted March 19, 2018 Since the consensus seems to be that this is affecting most Vive users (Whether they notice it or not) I have put in an official support ticket. Hopefully something comes of it. Thank you
Nammi-namm Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 I'm posting here with the same issue as you have, but its only affecting one eye, I find it interesting its happening to both eyes on your end. This might not be consistent with all hardware or software builds. Here is a mock-up I made showing how the black border looks on my end. I'm hoping we can get this sorted eventually!
scrapmetal Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 This seems to be fixed with update 3.002. Anyone else confirm?
DieGeist Posted April 19, 2018 Author Posted April 19, 2018 I haven’t been able to check yet. I’ll test tonight and see what f I can do a performance comparison as well.
DieGeist Posted April 20, 2018 Author Posted April 20, 2018 So I checked last night and it looks like the issue has been resolved. I also did a quick performance check against one of my previous recordings and found no loss of frames. Its also much more enjoyable to fly now since I don't have to move the screens so far back. Thank you.
