Fixing Italian Squadrons in Career Mode?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

The career mode is a superb addition to the game, and the dev team have really outdone themselves with the latest update.

Right now, though, if you join 22° Gruppo Autonomo Caccia Terrestre, the Italian fighter squadron flying MC.202s, the squadron doesn't feel Italian at all. Everyone has German names, ranks, and photos, and all the available pilot biographies for you are very specifically German.

I hope that this can be fixed at some point, as I think playing as an Italian would be a nice change of pace from the normal German or Russian careers.

Of course, I'd like to help however I  can, so here is a bio:

Italian Dreamer

Born on $[birthdate] in the town of Correggio, in the north of Italy, $[name] had a peaceful life growing up. His father, Giuseppe $[lastName], had taken up the traditional family occupation of butcher, and always had food to put on the family's table - and his mother, Maria $[lastName], knew how to cook it just right.

But, with this peaceful life, $[firstName] yearned for something new and exciting. One day, he discovered what he wanted to do, when he opened up a magazine and read an article about a man named Francesco Baracca. Enthralled by the tales of Baracca's exploits flying a SPAD fighter against Austro-Hungarian Albatroses, $[firstName] vowed to himself that he too would become a fighter pilot.

Giuseppe and Maria urged him to reconsider, wishing for their son to live a safe and peaceful life, but $[firstName] could not be swayed. Eventually, he grew to adulthood, and signed up to train as a pilot. The night before he left, his parents made the largest dinner they could, and wished their son good luck. With fear in their minds, tears in their eyes, but pride in their hearts, they waved goodbye as he boarded the train.

Despite being slow to adapt to military standards of dress and discipline, $[firstName] took to flying like a duck to water. When his training was complete, he was assigned to 20° Gruppo, 56° Stormo, flying Fiat G.50s.

It wasn't long before war came, and in September of 1940, $[firstName] was sent to Belgium to escort BR.20 bombers on missions against Britain. Arriving too late to support the Luftwaffe's efforts to destroy the RAF, the Italian force proceeded with limited success, bombing the south-east coast of Britain. $[firstName] and his fellow pilots saw little action, as the pitifully short range of their fighters prevented them from escorting the bombers all the way. Only the nearby 18° Gruppo, flying CR.42s, saw significant action, though the results made them envious of 20° Gruppo - they lost three aircraft, and shot down no RAF planes. It was a far cry from what $[firstName] had read in that magazine so many years ago.

The bombers and CR.42s left in January, while $[firstName] and his comrades stayed in Belgium until April. Finally able to visit his family, he headed towards Correggio as soon as he could. However, when he arrived, he was shocked to discover that his father had been struck with pneumonia - they had not told him in their letters to him, as they felt it might distract him. As he sat beside his father's bed, Giuseppe told $[firstName] that, while he always wanted $[firstName] to follow him and become a butcher, he was immensely proud of him for making his own way through life, and for putting everything on the line for Italy. Then, he held $[firstName]'s hand, and said goodbye.

Months later, the Axis invaded the Soviet Union, and once more, Italy sent aircraft to aid Germany's efforts. Believing that he could do the most good in Russia, $[firstName]'s wish to join $[startSquadronName] was eventually granted, and he arrived on the Eastern Front on $[startDate]. As he looked out at the unfamiliar landscape, he vowed that he would survive, return to Correggio, and become a butcher.

And here are some pilot photos:

If DEVs need some help for detailing italian career, translations and so on, I'll be glad to help them

There is no separate nation for Italy, so that's why you are seeing them with German names, awards, etc.  All the effort to give them the proper "Italian treatment" would require more work than is really warranted right now.

We'll be able to add Italian bio only (Italian Dreamer from the first post)
