It works better than any other trick, after 6 hours of testing ! ? S! Everything but normal Vsync causes screen tearing for me. But.... Now I dont run full screen (Jason's suggestion) and have ingame vsync on and Im runnign on my native monitor resolution (1200p). It is much much better now. Didnt test Wings of liberty full server or kuban map but in finnish server with 40 ppl was super smooth online. I was surprised.
blitze Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Using Full Screen and ingame Vsync myself. Non Full Screen caps my frames at 60fps no matter what the other settings are. I run a Freesync 144Hz Monitor off a Nvidia 1070 so I have neither Gsync or Freesync available and without Vsync I get screen tearing. With Vsync I get variable high 80 - 144fps with no tearing. Your mileage may vary... Campaign and MP is smooth.
Babayega Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Not to rehash an old topic but I recently spent many months away from BOS and installed it again. I was in the same boat. SMOOTH as butter before the updates past 3.0 and after that nothing but microstutters (especially in heavy turns) the fix for me was turning 4K textures on and turning off SSAO. I did leave Vsync on as it didnt seem to affect it. I dont have a 4K monitor only 1920x 1080 so its strange that was what fixed it. Nonetheless, its back to being very smooth again!
SAS_Storebror Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 4K textures aren't related to 4K monitors (it's just the texture size they're referring to), so it's not all that strange that the dev's recommendation to turn on 4K textures was part of the solution. SSAO has quite some impact on GPU performance, but IMHO it looks great as well. I managed to leave SSAO turned on without microstutters, at the cost of slightly reducing grass and distant landscape details. Mike

Mike I was a little deceived at first by the 4K textures option as I thought it would greatly reduce performance if left on. With my rig I get about 120-130 FPS on high settings on Kuban with 8 on 8 aircraft in bad weather. I since I cap at 60 I can live with that!! I havent tried on MP or Campaign yet but I am just happy that I was able to get rid of that awful stutter.

Some tweaking of settings post 3.00 patch helped solve most of the rest of the problems. A full on new GPU solved any remaining frame rate issues I was having IL-2: Great Battles Series needs a lot of VRAM. My old card had only 2GB and my new one has 8GB and it's a substantial difference in performance and smoothness between the two. The most recent patch even sorted out a few remaining performance issues when flying over dense forests.

I can see that my Nvidia 970 constantly fills up all available VRAM immediately at mission start. It's equipped with 4GB VRAM, but only 3.5GB of them have full bandwidth (an infamous Nvidia marketing gag, but at least it gave me a EUR 50 cashback from Amazon back in the days). Usually the Nvidia drivers are aware of that limitation and the card won't fill more than those first 3.5GB, but every now and then a "game ready" driver sneaks in where some clever programmer removed that limit, and I'll notice that immediately, because once the card fills more than 3.5GB, everything becomes unplayable. I was hoping for the 1080 Ti prices to drop after the RX release, but that won't come true anymore. Buying a card for 1000+ bucks with "just" 8GB is no option for me. I'd rather go with a 16GB 2070 than an 8GB 2080 Ti. Mike

SAS_Storebror Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Oh yes they do, but Nvidia stopped producing the chip for the 1080 Ti so you only get a few remaining cards at ridiculous prices from resellers, or used (or maybe fake new) ones from ebay. Essentially the little margin of the RX series on top of the 1080 Ti seemed to have driven Nvidia to that choice of artificial immediate shortage on yesterday's top performing card. Mike

Mike Ahh I didnt know! I got my 1080 Ti before the bitcoin craze or whatever it was. I think I only paid 799 for it. A few months later it was double the price.

No clouds in the sky. Test in QMB. See if you still have it. Jason Why does 4k textures make such a big difference? I am only running 1080p, yet 4k textures seems to fix everything. Thanks for your input.
Kalthios Posted November 30, 2018 Posted November 30, 2018 (edited) Sorry you guys are having stutters, MS FFB2 users feel your pain. Someday maybe we will all be able to enjoy this fine sim together, stutter-free. Until then try cranking up the camera smoothing to 100 and just dealing with the horrible lag of trying to look around. Edited November 30, 2018 by Kalthios
PaladinX Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Hi everyone, this old thing hit me today as well. Flying offline - no problems. Flying on Wings of Liberty - very bad micro stutters and the darker cockpits (eg 109 cockpit) are somehow pulsing slightly bright-dark-bright-dark... I have hundreds of hours online and offline, i cant explain what happened suddenly. Happens only in IL2. DCS runs smooth. System 10700K with 32 GB and a 3080Ti. I am playing in 4K with G-Sync on (LG OLED 42 C2 Monitor/TV). Any Ideas?
PaladinX Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Interestingly only on Wings Of Liberty. Finnish and offline running smooth. Is this maybe the reason why WOL is not populated anymore? Any reasonable ideas why this happens only there?
