The minimum setup for VR would be a 4 Ghz processor paired with a Gtx1060 or AMD 580. You can use an overclocked Ryzen but it might bottleneck the graphics card so I'd recommend an I5 or I7 (6500k, 6700k or newer) with fast 3000Mhz memory and overclocked to 4.8 Ghz or more. If you want to run ultra setting you'll need a 1080ti.

To actually enjoy the game without dips and drops in fps, and a minimum of nausea (stable 90 fps) while keeping a medium graphical fidelity, similar to what Prangster said,

an overclocked CPU with at least 4.8GHz (this is where the bottlenecking stops)

RAM with 3000MHz speed

GTX1070 (1060 enters bottleneck territory near furballs again)

It's quite demanding. The lack of graphical settings to differentiate from ingame doesn't help the issue.

4.0GHz on an AMD Ryzen or modern-ish (4000 series or higher) Intel chip will yield a locked 45 fps at high-ish detail provided you have a strong enough GPU. I recommend a GTX 1070 or above in this case. For 90 fps, be prepared to sacrifice quality in addition to needing a CPU running 4.7GHz or more.

For new rigs with no budget restriction:

i7-8700K at 5.0Ghz (provide good cooling solution)

8Gb RAM 3000MHz (for BOS I think 2x4Gb is enough, but it can be expanded to 4x4Gb if needed)

1070 is quite OK for Supersampling at 1.7 in SteamVR. Dont buy a 1060.

For a new rig I would definitely recommend more than 8gb of physical ram especially with no budget restriction.

I plan on doing a new build later this year, I have 16gb currently in this build I did in Dec of 2013, will likely go with 32gb for my next build.

I would consider 16gb the min currently.

Think future proofing.

Here we are talking about a rig for IL-2 VR. Not other duties.

In the previous version of IL2 (2.0x) the RAM usage was just 5Gb.

I don´t know the RAM usage of the new 3.001 version but I will check. Don´t know if new 4K textures could increase that.

But in any case, going beyond 16Gb is completely unnecessary for IL-2 VR.

I understand that going to 32Gb is because you use the PC for other purposes which really require 32Gb.

Since RAM is something that can be easily expanded, it will be better to go to 8Gb and then 16 if needed.

Well perhaps I am in the minority then, in that I play other games as well some which are more demanding in the ram department.

I also believe in "matched sets" of sticks,  like I did in 2013 I want my ram purchase to be a one time thing for that particular build I am doing.

But that is just my preference.

In any event I suppose all this may be mute, as the OP I don't see specifically asking about a new build.

Minimum system requirements from the Battle of Kuban store page:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows® 7 (SP1) / Windows® 8 / Windows® 10
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i5/i7 2.8 ГГц
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 660/Radeon HD 7770 with 2GB VRAM or better
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • RAM: 4 Gb+
  • Sound Card: DirectX®-compatible
  • Storage space: 10 Gb+
  • Internet connection: 256Kb/s for single-player campaign, 1Mb/s and faster for multi-player
  • DirectX® compatible flight stick is recommended

Obviously VR is considerably more demanding, min GPU for say the Rift is a GTX 970 card.

That min req. of the IL-2 store page could confuse/burn many future VR users.

I think they should put a note for VR usage.

Yes plus when running VR,  there is the additional overhead of the VR runtime/software - for Rift users they have double the layer, with both the Steam VR runtime and the Oculus runtime going.
