Il2 gear problems and fix - a pilots story

Well, my wingman and I were in a pair of IL-2’s last night on wings of liberty kuban, we were running heavy.  Upon take off, my wingman’s aircraft had barely cleared a hanger and it bumped his gear while retracting... I called it out to him as he barely noticed accept that he didn’t have indication of gear up red lights.  His right gear was half way in but the does were jammed and the left gear was hanging down.

after cycling his gear with no avail, he gave up and said “oh well”.

then I said “well, since you don’t have them locked... why don’t you try going inverted?”

“......”. Radio silence.....

”you copy?” I said.

”umm, are you serious?” He replied.

”well yeah, I mean, you don’t have lock so they are prob just mechanical fail and hanging... going inverted will let gravity put them up.”

”.......seriously??”

I then spoke as if I knew something “well I believe according to the IL-2 aircraft manual, on lowering your gear for landing it’s a Common practice to rock your wings to make sure the wheels get locked into place...and if they have it in the manual, they most likely simulated it..”

he laughs.. “ oooookay, I’ll give it a go”

 

so so he flips the fully loaded IL-2 on its back for a moment and what do I observe....

gear retraction with gravity!

i felt so smart at this point

 

though he didn’t remain inverted long enough for the gear to stay up, and as it swung down he nearly spun out of control but recovered..

 

me laughing in amazement “ oh man do it again but stay inverted longer!!!”

 

so so he rolled over and the gear went in, not all the way but it stayed this time, and with his engine sputtering from fuel starvation he rolled back and the gear stayed and aircraft had balanced.  

 

“hell ya!”  I shouted “it worked!”

”no way” with doubt “you’re f&$@ing kidding me”

“That’s a first for me, and I’ve been playing this since the beginning...” I said grinning because I knew he wouldn’t find this feature in any other sim he plays...

”ok let’s sink some ships!”

The right gear remained stuck but the left came up almost all the way, the wheel well fairings would not close all the way...

Reminds me of the Black Sheep Squadron show where TJ has to roll inverted every time to raise his gear until the mechanics get the part to fix it.Nice to know it works in the game.

Is that the one where the pretty nurse flirts with him, they all go to the O.C., get drunk and fight with each other? I think I saw that one. Or one similar....
