So, this is actually a positive post:)

so so I recently converted a buddy of mine to the IL2 series, they were hesitant for a while but finally decided to give it a go... also I gifted them BOS so they had to :)

after the control set set up and initial flight,  them being a pilot in real life caught on real fast and liked the feel of it.  However they are still trying to master not ground looping ;)

we we flew Russian, as pair of lagg-3’s running escort for a couple of pe2s.   Enroute to objective we flew a tight formation with the bombers and broke off to cover as they hammered the target..

encountered a lone Stuka on the way back and in a team effort we all took it down.  The score was awarded to my wingman, first online downed airplane, he gave a shout when he found out :)

unfortunately our second escort mission didn’t go so well for the bombers..  a 109 got between us and it managed to take out the big birds engines, but they got him back... bombs were still dropped and then the pe2s had to force land/crash...(sorry guys, we’ll get better)

on on the flight home, my buddy felt so bad, almost as if we had really lost those crews....

i was then hesitant to ask what he felt about the sim but before I could I heard

”I hate you”

” lol why” I replied,

after a short pause he says “because I like this sim...”. And chuckled.  “It just brings you back to the basics of flying... stick and rudder you know??”.

I let out a sigh of relief “ told you so...”

We continued on to base and did some great formation landing... he ended in a ground loop but he’s getting the hang of tail draggers now :)

after that hat he wanted to try the il2..

we we fly together in dcs world in the a10... so a lot of calling out ground approaches and weapons used was fun to communicate..

either dropping bomb (pickle) or guns (guns guns guns)

the joke we had was making the “brrrrrrrrrrt” sound as he rained 27mm cannons onto a tank column ... that was quickly drains out with the actual sounds of the cannons firing ;)

After we each destroyed 20 soft targets and 4 triple-a (that’s 40 and 8 lol) I had received damage to my engine and we made a precautionary landing at an abandoned airfield on our lines...

i tell him it’s only getting better with the new update...

thanks devs!

hi!

I gifted a friend BOS once. He never played it and steadfastly refused to buy a stick! His loss is all I can say!

Maybe you two should fly on different sides for a while - then you could pay him back better! Mmuahahahahahaaa!!!

Actually you should ask him to play with a simple gamepad, that'll do the trick and will be way cheaper than a joystick which is expensive especially if he doesn't know if he's going to play BoS.

Or a more cheaper option: why don't you ask him to board one of you're planes as a gunner ?

I don't actually live in the same time zone as he does any more (I'm an expat) so it would no longer be so easy to synchronize! To be honest I can understand why he didn't get into it.

To really get the most out of the game it's an expensive proposition and once you have the stick, you need the pedals, and throttle and at the very least track IR, though I would strongly recommend VR! I actually let him try VR/DCS on a full HOTAS, a few years back, and he did admit that he would play flight sims if he had that kind of setup. But he's one of these people waiting for the price of VR to come down, and if it wasn't for flight sims like BOS and DCS I couldn't blame him, as there are very few -if any- other games which justify the expenditure at the moment.

You dont need all of these things of course at least not in the beginning but once you get them it does kind of make it impossible to ever go back.

If you try track IR you can never go back to a monitor, and if you try VR you can never go back to Track IR. And by that I mean literally you can never go back, in that I would rather just not play flight sims as insane as it sounds! It's pretty much the same for all of the peripherals, I don't think I would play either without pedals or a throttle. Therefore my friend I couldn't in good conscience recommend that he play on a joy-pad! :P

I've been meaning to actually sit down and add up how much I have spent on flight sims these past few years!

Good to read. I've attempted to bring people ( friends/co-workers ) into the fold to no avail. They are WW2 aviation enthusiasts ( though to a lesser degree than me ) and when they overheard conversation between myself and a couple of fellow flight simmers, it really piqued their interest. I helped out and even lent them my spare HOTAS set-ups. It all just fizzled out for a variety of reasons.

One I invited to the house to try it out. He was floored by the graphical rendering and accurate look and enjoyed it, even if he had a lot to learn about just basic flying. What put him off was the disparity in the hardware needed to play the game and the hardware he already had. Others had decent rigs but found the learning curve too steep, or that they just didn't have the time to indulge in another hobby in their already busy lives.
