RaFiGer Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 @Community Even I have many books related to that history, I still face some questions regarding the Focke Wulf planes used bei Oberleutnant Max Stotz and Leutnant Emil "Bully" Lange during 1943 with 5/JG 54. There are of course these nice coloured photographs and black and white editions to paint schemes of "Black 1", "Black 5" and "Black 7" which allow me to do the schemes as close as possible for me, not 100% accurate of course But there is this dispute about Max Stotz when he was shot down on August 19th, 1943 in a Focke Wulf 190 -A6, Wk. Nr. 550201 coded "Black 7". In Summer 1943 the famous photos was taken showing coloured stills of "Black 5" and "Black 7". On October 7th, 1943 Leutnant Karl-Heinz Lüchau was shot down flying the "Black 5" possible Wk. Nr. 5868. Now to my questions: Is the "Black 7" from summer 1943 an A6 Model? Was Stotz shot down in a different plane, if the plane was actually an A5? Further I'm painting now a very interesting pattern of a Focke Wulf 190 A5 from Stab/JG 54, which was painted over which an tan colour and green blotches. Here I have beside the EDURD schemes at the moment no other source, but I have ordered a book showing photographs of this plane. So up to now here I wait for "Focke Wulf Fw-190 Volume Two 1943-1944" by J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek. Erik Mombeek`s booklet about JG 54 allows me in addition to do some Bf-109 F4 schemes which will add to this nice schemes in a proper way I hope someone could enlighten me & thank you for any help!
p2p3 Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 Hi RaFiGer! The second picture is FW 190 A5. The pilot in the picture is indeed Emil "Bully" Lang. To adjust to Russian terrain, planes were painted locally (over original camo) adding brown/sand colour. Following an order, these planes had to have their tactical designations removed. The bright green blotch in the middle is covering the green heart emblem (you can still barely see the heart shape). Also emblem on the upper cowling is sprayed over with the same green colour. I guess also majority of original service inscriptions have been painted over (warning signs, wing stepping area demarkations etc.). Later on, swastikas and serial numbers on the tail were also painted over. Unfortunately I do not have more pictures of the "black 7". I guess, that service inscriptions remained on the underside of the plane, but I'm not sure. Any help with the plane pictures or info would be highly appreciated. Best regards, P 2
