Talisman Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 (edited) Hi folks, Some interesting details on page 224 of this article (link below) regarding Development of the Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine. Standard production Merlin 66 engine, as fitted to the Spitfire Mk IX LF, overload tested @ 3,000 rpm with +18 lbs combat boost for 100 hours endurance (27 hours initially) with no adjustment or replacement and no involuntary stops and usual routine maintenance omitted entirely. The engine was then stripped down and found to be in excellent condition. The engine was then rebuilt without any replacement parts being fitted, then fitted to a Spitfire and given a further 100 hours endurance testing. The lecture was by Mr A C Lovesey: In 1930 Lovesey was awarded Aviators Certificate No. 9350 by the Royal Aero Club.[3] In the late 1930s Lovesey (who had become known as 'Lov' in company shorthand) began working with others on developing the new Rolls-Royce Merlin and just prior to the start of the Battle of Britain was placed in charge of the development programme. His contribution to the Merlin, doubling its power output and improving reliability at the same time, was a major achievement. Post-war, Lovesey adapted the Merlin for civil use and then turned to turbojet development with work on the Rolls-Royce Avon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_Lovesey http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/merlin-lovesey.pdf I hope the Spitfire Mk IX variant we get for BoBP will be the LF version with the Merlin 66 engine. It would be nice if the developers could tell us which version they are planning to include. Guest deleted@50488 Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 (edited) The subject of the prevailing elevator down on many shots and videos of various Spitfire models in flight as opposed to what we have in BoX suggests that something is modelled differently in the it's Spitfire Vb and now IX models.... With any combination of weight ( * ) / speed / power I am never able to set elevator trim in such a way that I can observe the elevator even if just slightly deflected down without the aircraft "wanting" to dive.... Flying level always actually requires a bit of Up elevator, which is not in sync with what we can observe IRL ( ? ) One among many references to this "Spitfire feature" : https://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?122379-Spitfire-flight-control-rigging ( * ) only based on fuel load, no ammunition since that's the way those aircraft are seen on those shots and videos. Velxra Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 (edited) This man has a very good mini review of the IX, P51, and 109's performance. Start from the beginning of the video if you like, its quite interesting. Edited July 15, 2018 by Geronimo553

Start from the beginning of the video if you like, its quite interesting. Good? I would call that “review” laughable. The man claims the 109 could climb at 5800 ft/m (for metric users that’s 29m/s). Not even the Bf 109 K4, the pinnacle of the 109 design, was anywhere close to being capable of that. He then claims the P-51 can’t turn and claims it’s because the ailerons lock up at 300mph. Finally he tops it all off by saying the Spitfire is even worse than the P-51. The Spitfire. Bad at turning. What.. And I googled him, because I just had to know who this guy is supposed to be. I find he was born in 1934. This guy was 5 years old when the war kicked off. Of course, he also claims he flew top secret missions in the Nicaraguan civil war and was paid with a P-51D for his services; because what good is a story without some super secret blackops sprinkled in. Give me a break...? 1
Talisman Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 Well said Zirashi, I could not have put it better myself, LOL. His credibility level is rather low to say the least. Happy landings, Talisman
